Hi, we're going to Ravenglass next week and the C&CC say Corney Fell isn't suitable for vans or motorhomes.
Does anyone know if the alternate route is signposted?
Cheers.
I presume the route shown on their website map linked (Travel button) from this page is suitable for any vehicle?
Their advice seems only about the possibility of SatNavs choosing an unsuitable route - "Access and SatNav Advice.
Sat Nav may take you over Corney Fell, which is unsuitable for caravans and motorhomes"
No problem! Their website isn't the easiest to navigate - it takes at least a couple more clicks to download the pitch fees list, in very small print (yes, I know you can zoom in using Ctrl and + but it's not very user-friendly!).
You have to turn off the main road to get onto Corney Fell, which is basically a single track road over the fell used as a short cut by some locals and others in the know. Definitely unsuitable for motor homes, caravans and not for the faint hearted under any circumstances! The main road is single carriageway and quite narrow with many twists and turns and some ups and downs, so don't try to rush and enjoy the drive and the scenery.
Hi, just a thought, but assuming your traveling across the A66, if you carry on to Workington and join the A595 this takes you on to Ravenglass as the alternative of the M6/jct 36 is not the best of roads. hope this helps
I'd recommend you do as Bootlucy suggested. Much better road than coming up from the Kendal side.
Another reason to avoid Corney Fell is that Sellafield workers use it as a short cut back to Cockermouth and it can be unbelievably busy when the shifts end. Saying that, I quite like it as a drive if I am cutting down towards Calder Bridge although the time I did it at night in thick fog required more than a little concentration!
