Hi all me and my wife very seriously thinking of getting a camper van, price between 4k to 8k, any advise please what's good, what to avoid, I hear the t4 good but would like what ever we get has a toilet as a must. Thanks in advance.

£4k - £8k limits your choice to older vehicles, but there are still some good bargains out there.

I would widen my search to include other base vehicles, particularly the Fiat / peugeot / Ford models which I think you may find more roomy. I'd definitely go for Diesel and avoid older Talbot vehicles which had a terrible gearchange.

Next, look at Autotraders Motorhomes. At a quick glance there are quite a few vans around, but if you enter your postcode, you can narrow in down to ones in your area.

I had a Talbot Symphony which had toilet, shower, oven, fridge etc and loved it. You can pick up a pretty good one for your budget.

For that kind of budget you are not going to get very much, which was exactly why I decided to build my own!

I am not all that good at DIY, but I ended up with a 2008 LWB Renault Master that most people think is the absolute Bee's Knees! OK mine ended up costing me slightly over £10k but I know of lots of other similar people to myslef who have built complete high quality conversion for well inside your budget.

The first step is to buy yourself a decent panel van and by decent I would suggest you go for one that has a fully galvanised body such as a Renault Traffic, Master or whatever they are called as either a Vauxhall or Nissan of which all of these started to be fitted with a fully galvanised body after 2004......... Or go for a post 2007 Peugeot/Citroen/Fiat, but I doubt if you could get one of those within your budget.
Whatever you do, don't even consider buying a rust bucket such as a Mercedes Sprinter or Ford Transit as bodywork repairs will end up costing you an arm and a leg!

Then what a lot of people do is buy a caravan from a breakers or similar and make that interior fit into the van...... I didn't do it that way, I built a very lightweight frame type of construction with oak ply facings. It honestly isn't all that hard to do and there are several very helpful forums such as www.diymotorhome.co.uk where you will find people who have done their conversions to help you along the way.

I agree that it will probably be difficult to find something for that budget, but not impossible! When we were trying to find the perfect van for us we took quite a while as it is important not to rush into this kind of purchase. In the end we settled for the Tribute 650, which has served us very well. We will be looking to upgrade at some point soon though. One thing we did, which I can only recommend, is tested quite a few in the name of research. We would hire different models of camper vans (from sites like this one) and go on little trial holidays. It really helped us to narrow down what was important to us and what wasn't. Just a suggestion. Good luck if the sleeper symphony hasnt already worked out!

By chance, I spotted a couple of older Fiat and Talbot based campervans at local dealers. Both were around the £7000 screen price.There is a good chance these could have toilet and even shower? We had a 2 litre petrol Talbot ages ago. It did about 24 mpg, was reliable and had a good gearchange. The only problem we had with it was in very hot weather in France when the fuel seemed to vapourise and the engine developed a "miss". I improvised a heat shield to the fuel pipe and this cured it for the rest of the holiday until we reached cooler climates. Some of the older Talbots and Fiats rotted but others seemed to last well. We have seen some beauties on our travels. Just shop carefully
