Hi to everyone and my first question please. Just brought my first Motorhome it is an Eldis autoquest 200 on a 2005 plate. It is a little strange as it has only done 2800 miles, it is like new both inside and underneath. The only problem is what I thought was wallpaper a bit like a vynal covering is coming away at the edges.

I did not do a damp test as never heard of one before logging on but the vehicle has no damp, mildew or smell at all.

I believe it was purchased new and hardly used it has every mot etc

So my question is any idea on what has caused it and can it be fixed hope it is not a complete board replacement as it appears from a novice googling

All help on this and no doubt many more questions very much received

Thanks

Ian

You have arrived at the right place with questions, and answers will be forthcoming, (or as in my case an idea to get you underway) and welcome to the forum. Please let us know if we are helping you.
So, 2005,and only 2,800 miles on the clock, accompanied by all MOT certificates backing that up.
Our first Motorhome was an Elddis, and it had a similar wall covering, with seams covered by a 'tape' where joins were made. I only know that this type of covering is affected by cold, which in our winter's is a cause of damp. It does not mean that the body integrity has been compromised. Indeed the soft furnishings will if left on the vehicle , get extremely cold, and then damp. If you purchased from a dealer, ask them about it. Other than that have a word with the person you bought it from see if they know why, what etc. Good luck.

Our seam tape is the same and ours is a 2014 van. I'm going to run a wallpaper wheel tool over them when I remember.

If your wallcovering is lifting slightly at the edges or even bubbling slightly away from the edges, you can run some high quality waterproof wallpaper adhesive behind the affected areas.
a. If it is at the edges simply, very carefully lift the edges of the paper and squeege the new adhesive behind it than flatten back and thoroughly wipe it clean.
b. If it is bubbling slightly in places, take a pin and possibly a scalpel and very, very carefully prick and then slit the paper before lifting it exceptionally carefully and then squeege the adhesive under it before very throughly flattening the paper back into position.

If you are lucky and have been exceptionally careful, no one else will see what you have done and even you will have to search forever and a day to find your areas of repair.

Good luck
Phil

Thanks for all the advice, I think you have it spot on. It has lifted and coming away at the seems. Over the cab area each side of the bed it has come away a bit more.

I do not have the Motorhome yet another few days, the dealer has said it will come with new habitation certificate so I presume, hopefully rightly that if there is any damp or water ingress it will be picked up, so fingers crossed.

If no damp I hope it is just peeling paper for what ever reason.

Cheers

Ian

Be very aware Ian that oh so very sadly there are a very limited few good trustworthy dealers out there in the big bad world that we live in, there are however one hell of a lot of sharks!!

From my own experiences gained over many years of caravan ownership, finding a good, professional, conscientious dealer workshop facility is almost akin to finding the proverbial needle in the haystack.

Check the small print of your guarantee etc. and possibly invest in a damp meter, you can normally find them in a good caravan accessory shop or eBay.

I hope your new purchase ticks every single one of your boxes and that it is in absolutely tip top condition.

All the best

Phil

I bought a 9 year old motorhome in 2004 it was also very low mileage but it turned out that a previous owner lived in it for four years without traveling many miles, it had a lot of issues due to condensation as you would expect from living in a confined space, so mileage is not a very good indication of use

Well my poor life has just ended - dealer just did a habitation check and faxed it to me. Was going to pick it up 200 miles away in the morning.
Just finish insurance quotes and was ringing back at six to buy.

Picture the scene maybe a bit old but immaculate inside and out, only 2900 miles, full service history, dealer replaced both batteries, full service and belt pulley and water pump replaced etc only to read a 2' x 1' side panel above the cab where you sleep wait for it 90% and on the other side 50%. Panel under the little toilet cassette door 70% needs replacing.

It is so sad everything else is so wonderful.

Thought I would share it with you all and it is only a bit each side. Rang one damp fixing chap and he said 90% is only 10% off a bottle of water

Life is cruel

Have you paid for this vehicle?. If not and you still want it, get them to fix it. Dealers of any quality have service departments. Tell them you will still have it if they ...A, Sort it, ...B, knock a lump off purchase price....C, Pick it up after the drop in price and get it sorted elsewhere....with someone who cares for vehicles. A repair for damp needs doing with care and attention by a professional. Again, I wish you luck, but please remember "Let the buyer beware". I do not want to put a downer on your new van and the excitement you were feeling when you joined the forum, but please make sure that this is the right way to go. 200 miles is a long way to travel to get problems sorted as and when they arise.
