I need to replace the build in the light pictured but I can't work out how to remove the bulb. Can anybody help please? I bet it's dead easy but I'm worried about breaking something. Thanks.

press the bulb glass in and turn anti clockwise - should be the same as any halogen fitting in a home. I think !

To remove the bulbs on my MH I need to use a very small screwdriver (similar to those used on glasses to tighten the small retaining screws) to prise the plastic inner ring towards the middle of the bulb and away from the outer plastic.

The inner ring has a join, usually very hard to see, and a gentle prising should allow it to spring out.

The bulb pulls out and replaces easily and replacing the inner ring usually needs a bit of jiggling about but eventually pops back in.

You might consider replacing the Halogen bulb with LED lights.

Much less power is used and they can be bought on Ebay for peanuts.

We changed all ours a couple of years ago, around £20 for 20 bulbs, and we've not had to replace any since then.

You CAN'T swap a flourescent for any other type of bulb.
By their nature, they run off a high voltage that is provided by a small inverter in the fitting.

If you want to swap a flourescent you have two choices.

1. Swap the entire fitting. (Recommended)

2. Remove the innards of the existing fitting, excl. the switch, and fit in 12V LED strips.

If I understand correctly, yes. Disconnect the inverter, move the two wires from the O/P and connect to the I/P (12V). Use these to feed the LEDs. You could use any suitable 12V LEDs. This is basically what I was suggesting as option 2.

However, I would still simply replace the unit.

only 240 volts twist to remove or insert, 12volt just push in two straight pins. you light has three tabs near bulb they will not be just for show try turning to remove looks like they are holding heat shield as halogens get very hot (hot enough to burn fingers when light) replace 20watt halogen bulb with 10watt led for same LUX.
don't believe this 5 watt led for 50watt halogen crap.

I replaced my 10W halogens with 2W LEDs for the same LUX.

I think that 4or 5W LEDs would be a good replacement for a 20W halogen.

Back to the original Question,

Bobajob, those bulbs 12v are normally push in & the 240v ones are push & turn to the right & they come with a sucker that grips the flat bottom of the bulb to move it, have a word with an electrician they are bound to have a spare one you can have

I must confess that I've never come upon an LED that runs on 240v or 12V. Generally you would have a transformer that converts 240V to 12V. 240V LEDs have electronics built in to convert the mains.

The thing to remember is that LEDs are driven by current. The voltage across an LED is fairly constant (1 or 2 volts), so a controller is used to regulate the current. This is generally built into the bulb base.

Back to the original question... In most vans, the charger (Zig or similar) powers all the lighting, so there is no need to have any 240V lighting. It is all 12V.

If you really do want to modify a flourescent, you should locate the inverter, disconnect the input (i/p) wires to it. disconnect the output wires (O/P) and connect them to the input. You can then use suitable 12V LEDs.
