Has anyone bought a 12v microwave and do they work ok.We bought our 1st motorhome and doesn't have a microwave so thought I'd ask around before I buy one.
Have we come to the stage that a microwave is essential equipment ? It'll be a dishwasher next.
A modest microwave (around 500 Watts)either 12 V or via an inverter will draw maybe 60-65 Amps, so it's purely short time use. It will also need some pretty hefty wiring (probably 10 sq mm) and switches. I think a 240V one is the best way to go.
Alternatively, your van probably has a perfectly good gas cooker.

I'm tired of reality, so I'm off to look for a good fantasy.
Agree with the Capt!
Microwaves (230 volt ones ...) can be useful if you normally on a mains hook-up - even then some may trip a 6 amp supply at start-up.(6 amp quite common in France/Spain/Portugal)
------------- The older I get the better I used to be.
don't go wasting your money on stupid gadgets , my mate buys all sorts of stuff for his wife to use in the camper, she has never used any of the gadgets, he then sells them on at car boot sales.

buy a 240v one and just use it when your hooked up
We have a microwave/grill in our van rather than an oven. It's just an ordinary kitchen one. We use it on sites with EHU, mainly for heating up ready meals on wet days.....
But we wouldn't have used a normal oven, we prefer to cook outside if possible
Thanks all for the reply. Haven't bought one and we're away to Fort William next week then onto Morvich for couple days. It shall be the gas hob & oven.
Not sure why the anti microwave feeling. My camper came equipped with one. I must say I would rather use the micro' for two minutes to cook some rice, than I would use the expensive gas to boil water, simmer for 8 minutes, trail off across the field to pour the water down a sink. I agree it is bit of an expense if you do not already own one, but, if on hook up, you have already paid for the electric you will use.
We had a 240volt 500w microwave supposed to be built for caravan use not cheap compared normal household models,
Was total load of c~~p went rusty in 3/4 months had to use very long times to cook.
Bought one from Asda for £29 never looked back still going strong after 5years 650 watt, not a sign of rust.
