Good morning
I was wondering if any one can advice my son who wants to buy a camper van
There requirements are

A petrol/LPG
Drives similar to car
They want to use it in London and weekends all year round
They like VW but not obsessed they like interior and size of T3
There focus is easy drive comfort and fuel
They are not very mechanical
Any thoughts advice as to what and where to buy
Thank you

Presume he needs petrol to drive within LEZ, yes? Unless he has good mechanical knowledge & a good toolkit I would avoid the 1980s T3/T25 & go for a 1990s T4. Search ebay etc there are petrol campervans around & they go for much cheaper prices than diesel. It's best to go for the 2.5litre petrol for better performance than 2litre petrol version. If it does not already have an lpg conversion then one can be fitted but cost has to be factored in.

He is also better paying a bit more for a conversion from new like Autosleeper Trident or Trooper rather than a cheaper conversion done later on a van that could have had a previous life as a builder's van.

Your son might not be mechanically minded, but does he have any DIY skills?
I only ask as it isn't at all difficult to build your own van to your own exact specification............. It can't be that difficult as even I was able to do it!

Making one yourself can and does save a massive amount of money and then you can sit back with an ear to ear grin with a large glass of something and smugly say to yourself "I did this"!

If this is of any interest then why not pop over to have a chat with us over on the free to join diymotorhome.co.uk forum?

Good luck with the decision making and MUM, please don't be too protectively Mumsy with him as he is a big boy now.
Phil

I converted a short wheel base High Top Vauxhall Vivaro (due to extortionate VW prices) Had excellent mpg, comfortable both to drive and camper use. If there is a next time I'd choose a long wheel base Vivaro. Registered it with DVLA as a camper and after enjoying it for a few years I made a large profit on selling it too :-)
