Intend to take our Cocker Spaniel with us to Spain this Nov-Dec taking ferry from Dieppe, dog has a passport has anyone any advice or useful information to aid the trip.
took our dog to spain last year no problems .
you just need to take the dog to a vets about 24 hours before you go to the port have it checked over given a worming and flea treatment tablet.
vet fills in the dogs passport that you show at the port.
Thats pretty much it easy peasy.
Thanks Gerona, your reply has certainly re assured me. Out of interest which ferry did you use, am using Newhaven - Dieppe as the cost of other ferries was very high due in part to having to book a dog friendly cabin.
Dogs do not need flea treatment this has changed and you have between 72 and 24 hours do not leave it till the last minuet, we try and book our dog in with 2 days to spare. Its quiet easy to take your dog but plan ahead and make life easy.
I have taken our dog to France and Spain many times the vet looks the dog over gives him a tablet fills in the passport that's all there is to it 24 hrs is the minimum time you have to do it why waste longer the vet we use asks us what time ferry are we getting and has back dated the details because we wanted to get an earlier ferry.
Laste year we used the Plymouth St Malo Ferry but will be useing the tunnel in a couple of weeks much better than the ferry but it's personal preference.

It's 120 hours and 24 hours not 72 and check the vet has filled the passport out correctly with the time and date before you leave the premises

Thanks how do you know if it is filled out correctly, what should I look for?
Page 16 must be filled in by the vet with the medication used, the time and date (very important that this is correct) and the vets stamp and signature.
Page 28 (clinical examination) has also to be filled in, although there is some dispute as to whether this is mandatory but I always get them to fill it in anyway to save any problems later
We had the vet check in the Loire region with a 3.30pm appointment, ferry booking the next day at 4.30. Vet put the wrong time on the passport and we were sent to wait another hour. We weren't the only one this happened to on that journey, one poor couple had to wait 2 hours and then travel to Devon. Not such a problem now as there is much more leeway with the timings. Tunnel for us now tho, really easy.
Tip for hot dogs - microfibre towel in cold water, wring out and wrap around dog, panting stops within 2 min, worked in 34C heat.
