Hi all this is my first post of what will be many trying to pick the brains of you experts. We have recently sold our house and are going into a rented property for 6 months with a view to buying a motor home and going travelling from March next year. We need an internet connection that we can use in the house for now but then can take with us when we go. People keep mentioning dongles to me but being a bit of an oldie it's confusing me a bit. Would be grateful if anyone could give us any advice please.
We use a 3 wifi set up. Its called mi fi and uses a small portable dongle that can be placed where you get the best signal. Just paid £30 for a 12 month 12GB data sim. We use it in our caravan and when travelling around in order that we can use our computers. Have a look on their website.
Our broadband is terrible at home, if son's watching a film no-one else can get any internet connection so I just use the data on my mobile phone instead, connected wirelessly to my laptop.
I got a mifi for going away last week, on the 3 network and pleased with it so far. I would not use it for watching video's but email and general browsing it has been great.
We have had 3MiFi for years and I have to say its been very good coverage wise. This year we had 2 landline failures which openwoe wern't quick to repair. Our little MiFi quite happily ran four computers during this period
(It will run 5 devices but the newer version runs more)
In addition the speeds were better than the landline
I would quite happily give up the landline, and use our mobiles as phones and the MiFi for the internet at home as well as in the van, by have been overruled by senior management who wants the "security" (haha) of a landline.
She cant see the cash benefits on not paying landline rental when we are away in the van
Did try a vodafone dongle previous to 3 but it didnt last long - poor coverage and it couldnt hold onto a connection.
I've had a Vodafone mifi for most of this year and found it very good all round the country. It also supported the internet at home when we moved and difnt get connected for 2 or 3 weeks.
I tried to get it unlocked to use a 3 sim in but haven't been able to do it. 3 is cheaper than Vodafone, £25 for 15gb to use over 12 months, Vodafone is only for 3 months.
I've just bought a Huawei tablet which takes a sim so I'm using 3 in that in the van at the moment.
