Probably because it's a real switchback and not a motorhome road. You might be ok in a modern campervan like a Bongo but much longer and you'd like take the back end off or beach. Plus passing places are few and far between, few guard rails and you've got to be adept at reversing! As my friend has discovered, parking etc. sensors on single track roads with ditches and drops aren't too much help!! She's got a Disco and she found it hard going. I've not done it this year - it used to be our way of celebrating a great event on Skye on our way home!
If the website says not, best to stick with it!

We've done the scary road from Applecross over to Kishorn in a VWT5. We have a Trigano Tribute now, and there's no way I'd take it on that road!! It was awesome and scary!
I have just watched a video on YouTube taken by a motorcyclist which gives a pretty good view of the route. It does look narrow in places and I would question whether my 7.5mt motorhome which is nearly 2.5mts wide would be a suitable vehicle to tackle it in?
We met someone at the John O'Groats site, who was doing NC500 anti-clockwise - that is, he'd done the easiest section up from Inverness. He was in an 8.2 m long MH, he had an HGV liscence and was relaxed about the coming single track road with hairpin bends and 1st gear steepness round the coast south of Kylescue Bridge (where the passengers have the video running). Keep to the map on the website and be sensible, you'll be fine.
We have 1:50,000 OS maps so I knew what any detours to deserted beaches were like - you can't rely on any signal away from the bigger towns, so Google maps won't always be available. If you have time, you could take bikes to explore side roads where you might worry about being able to turn around at the far end.
We are planning on travelling the nc500 in our touring caravan, we understand that there are places that we should avoid but we want to see as much as possible so have decided to travel to sites and drive to see sights in between . We have 9days and don't want to spend most of it packing and hitching up. Any ideas as to where is best to base ourselves so we can take in most of the road. Tia
Ullapool is easy from Inverness, stop there with your caravan. You can head south along the coast for a day trip, and you get up along the west coast to the far north west corner & back in a day in a car, especially in June / July when it doesn't get dark.
You can then head up to the north coast towing on the fast A road that's away from the coast and you'll be fine for the top and east coast back to Inverness - just take big care on the notorious Berrydale Braes as the articulated lorries have to swing over to get round the hairpin bends; check a map, may be a YouTube of it.
There aren't that many sites to chose from, but they're all on UKCS. I hope you have a wonderful trip.
Our van is just under 6.2 M long, I chickened out of going over the Bealach na ba from applecross to kishorn in it. Car no probs but van no. However the road in from sheildaig has some pretty scary moments too especially where it hugs the steep coastline closer to sheildaig.
Much scarier coming back from applecross than going in, but sooooo worth the journey.
Been over the Bealach na ba loads of times in our 6.3mtr van ..no problem 7.5T and bigger delivery vans run over it all the time so if your a confident driver its no problem, Caravans are not allowed though.
