hello, this is my first post though I've been a member for some time and read some very useful stuff here. Thanks all. I'm in a quandary; do I sell on the dear old Renault and have a major upgrade to a 1998 VW Autosleeper Clubman GL 2.5 TDi, or do I upgrade Renault with power steering etc. Any thoughts on the merits or pitfalls of either would be very welcome. I've thought about it so much that I'm almost gibbering now and can't decide. Cheers Ellen
VW T4 is still popular so parts availability should be good for a few more years at least. Parts for 1980s Renaults will be more difficult to source & you risk being off the road for the sake of a small & unobtainable part. So VW obviously.
Hi,
I would also go down the same route for the above reasons.
That's assuming the VW is in a reasonable state to start off with.
Good luck.
Regards,
Greg
hi Nora, it's the T 1000 SWB petrol Harmony. with everything..It's very versatile in layout as well. I love it and have already put solar power on about 18 months ago.....It's just that bit cramped and bits becoming harder to find.......I'll go and play in the VW and see how that is. Think my head needs to rule my heart on this one! Regards, Ellen
We have an L reg Clubman & love it. Has cupboards over the cab not a second double bed, loads of storage. The habitation end has been fine, monocoque body so it hasn't leaked, needed a new water heater & the gas on the fridge doesn't work but it's a great layout that packs in all we need. Back door lock is pathetic but most AS Clubmen have some jerry rigged system to make it secure. The VW engine end has done 100K and it can be a hunt online to source parts like the speedo cable. But several mechanics say it's still running in, we get about 30mpg. Ours hadn't been cared for so we had a couple of years sorting wee surprises like the wrong battery & ancient tyres, but the AA comes when called & we have a good independent local garage.
In summary - the devil you know vs the devil you don't. Ensure the Clubman has a Habitation Certificate. But we've been looking for an equally good replacement for years - if you don't change your Renault now, something else will turn up another time and you'll know "this is it".

If it's a 1986 Harmony it will be based on a Talbot Express.
There wasn't an official Trafic based Harmony as I'm sure Auto-Sleepers would have sued whoever tried to sell one.
It is a D reg. 1986 Autosleeper Harmony , which is written on the van in various places. The V5C states : Make RENAULT Model :Trafic as Camper. It is the beige, blocky shaped type. Thanks Ellen

Do you have a photo that we could see?

If that's what it says on the V5 then I can understand why you say it is a Renault Harmony, but the fact is that Auto-Sleepers made the Harmony on the Talbot Express chassis and later on the Boxer, but not the Trafic. All the Trafic Auto-Sleeper models that I know of are listed here: http://rtmr.org/autosleeper.html
Is your van this shape, with a wedge shaped front?
There has been a mix up somewhere and I am not saying it is you that have mixed them up but...
Please don't misunderstand me, I am trying to be helpful, not obstructive. If you were keeping the van, it would not really matter but you could have problems selling it.
