Need some advice.
In recent years,I have developed gephyrophobia which basically means I have a ridiculous fear of driving on high bridges,elevated motorway sections etc examples being the M5 over the River Exe,Saltash bridge,QE2 at Dartford,A10 at Ware and other similar places.
I haven't driven up north for a long time as ive had no need to but I'm looking to possibly travel up to west Scotland in the campervan for a week or so and would like to try and avoid any grief.So far the only problem ive really identified is the M6 over the Manchester ship canal.Can any fellow members offer any advice as to what route to take? Never had this problem when I was young and fearless but now I'm older and hairless it can occasionally cause me and the GLW to have roadside discussions not normally included in our road trip itineraries!
I haven't quite built up the bottle to try hypnosis to get over it but may yet have to.

I don't like high bridges either, but I manage. The Erskine bridge is no real problem compared to the Forth road bridge or the Kessock bridge. If you're going near Glencoe there's the Bridge at Ballachulish and of course, you'd better avoid the Skye bridge.

Normally, suggest that people visit the East coast, but there are a number of bridges and elevated sections there too.

I'm not a great fan of the A68 and although it may be a bit longer, I'd take the A1. I agree that the Kincardine bridge is a fairly safe option, and anyway there has been some disruption round the Forth road bridge due to the construction of the new bridge.

Depending on where you're actually going, you might consider avoiding the bridges altogether and head for Stirling and then the A84. (check for elevated sections on the M80 first)

However, I hope that you can get some help to overcome this problem. Have you got a co-driver who can drive on the problematic bits?

A1 Newcastle to Edinburgh, onto Edinburgh Bypass, head for Stirling then head West. Nae brigs involved.

Kincardine Brig can be bypassed nowadays by using the lower level Clackmanan brig.

I'd go with Capt Lightning above, though probably I'd take the 68 though you do have the short bridge over the river Tweed. It then depends where you want to visit. Connel Bridge north of Oban, you can't see the water, is very short and traffic-light controlled. Ballachulish isn't that high. Skye Bridge is a no-no for you but you can still get ferries from Mallaig or Kylerhea. Kylesku, Kessock are probably out from what you say.

If your GLW doesn't drive, then you really need to get help with the phobia. I hope you can find a solution.

this is the way to go for me A66 is a slow road if you are stuck be hide lorry's

Lk I have the same problem, when crossing the Avonmouth Bridge it is white knuckles and focused straight ahead, I have done it for the last ten years on our annual hols towing our caravan. This never used to bother me years ago as went over the Forth Bridge many times way back then, but after a very bad spell of vertigo that is how I am now and I really wish I could overcome the problem, so you are not the only one suffering. When we went to Skye it was by ferry both ways.

First of all head north on m6 to M 56 north Wales, take first exit A49 Warrington, continue through Warrington, and pick m6 north of Warrington this misses the thelwal viaduct.Carry on m6 north past Glasgow following Stirling come of for Callender then A82 crainlaric and Fort William

Thanks for all your constructive views and the advice offered.
Just to put some posters minds at rest,I have developed not been diagnosed with the apparent condition but it hasn't stopped me driving and during the summer went all over France,not including the Millau viaduct by the way,and had no major problems.I would respectfully suggest there are far worse road users with bad even criminal habits to worry about than me getting a bit sweaty over high level driving.
long ago,a well known fisherman was a stipla for using A and B roads and avoiding motorways as he wanted to enjoy the scenery at a slower pace and I think there's something to be said for that view.
Why would we want to race through these beautiful islands and miss all the sights and characters that make us uniquely who and what we are?
And yes,the guv'nor does drive so fear not,we'll get there.
Again thanks for the help and we look forward to making the trip and receiving the welcome we've heard so much about from the locals and enjoying the apparent breath taking scenery.

The thing about the clackmannan brig is that it is lower than the kincardine brig but it is also more open, with a low barrier at the side so that might be problematic

Can I just point out the Lune Bridge on the M6 at Lancaster, it's been worked on recently, and is now rather open at the junction. Not unlike the Ribble bridge at Preston.

Another vote for A66, M6, M74 but come across to Ardrossan (A70 or A71), catch the ferry to Arran then the one off the other side at Lochranza which lands you in Claonaig in Kintyre.
