As we are going to be over in Europe for quite a considerable amount of time this coming year, I will be taking out a European wide breakdown cover, but as there are so many, which is the best company to go with?
I am a member of the Camping & Caravan Club, but unlike the Caravan Club, the C&CC don't appear to offer a breakdown recovery service.
I have read many glowing reports of the CC's Green Flag cover, but I am not a member of the CC.
My wife came up with the name of the Driver Guardian organisation that has come top in several reviews.
I have also read good reports of the ADAC organisation, but they are German and their website is in German and I neither read or speak that language!
So which is the best company to go with?
Many thanks
------------- There is a great World to be found out there, but by the very day, to find where it is becomes more of a challenge!
If you need all year continental breakdown cover for motorhome then Saga does that so worth getting a quote from them.
When checking quotes from any breakdown cover provider ensure your vehicle is not outside any quoted size & weight limits & also continental trip limit, ie some are 60 days or 90 days.
Apart from that there will be good & bad stories about all companies. It's pot luck. If they come out in 20mins they are good. If you are unlucky enough to break down when they are busy & wait hours then the same company is bad.
Plenty come unstuck though because they have not read the full t&c's & have not contacted the company by phone to check details before taking out cover.
Pop over to the Camping and Caravanning Abroad section, there are lots of threads about continental breakdown cover including ADAC.
Both the big clubs offer continental cover, you need to look in the foreign section of their websites. Green Flag only covers UK use but the Red Pennant policy covers European use. CCC offers Mayday breakdown cover for the UK but I'm sure they have a foreign service similar to Red Pennant to cover Europe.
As Opensauce has already mentioned, check the small print especially over vehicle sizes and recovery as many people seem to get caught out with a policy that does not meet their needs.
For me the RAC is tops. called them out on several occasions when on the continent and, regardless of country they have responded very well. call centre in Paris but fluent English.
I thoroughly recommend Flux Rescue. I used it as part of my general insurance with both a 30 year old VW and then a 10 year old Transit Motorhome. Both broke down in France and both were fixed. Where a part was needed for the Transit we had three days in a hotel all paid for etc. etc.

We always use red pennant, the caravan club one About six years ago we had a problem in France, and could have had a better service , all sorted with ease, and no fuss. Before the red pennant We always used the AA European service which if you check their t c your dog is not covered, and we always have our dog with us.hoping to be a little helpful. Make sure that they cover you for your length ! As most only cover up to 7 meters Adac cover for any size ! strange thing is if you break down in UK they send AA , who won't cover you in there policy if your over 7 meters , if you phone ADAC they speak English ,
Watch out for the size thing I needed repatriating back to the UK from Belgium with the AA in my handbook it is 2.2m wide they wouldn't bring it back because it measured 2.3m the tail pipe of the exhaust stuck out slightly past the side skirt of my motorhome.
I had to pay to bring it back myself.
they did provide a hire car whoop de doo.

How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
