Hi, I've joined the site as my wife and I have been looking for a way to resurrect our travel bug, unfortunately she has progressive MS which has meant a fairly major lifestyle change over the past few years. Mobility is an issue and she uses a wheelchair outside but is able to get around with some help inside.

We have researched the pros and cons of towing a caravan but although it has some merits we are favouring the MH route. Our friends that have a campervan have also encouraged us down this road.

We recently viewed a MH at a hire depot and intend to rent to see how we get on. Sorry for the long post but we are only in our 50's and are not giving up yet so any tips or advice would be gratefully received.

Thanks BB

When looking pay attention to motorhomes with level floors. Most will have a slight step up into the cab area but some these days also have different level floor sections which even for the able bodied can prove difficult. Some motorhomes are on lower profile chassis which might help as other wise it can be quite a climb up into the van. Think also about where the wheelchair will be stored. Some motorhomes have garages but the downside is you usually have to climb up to get into the bed. Good luck with your quest.

David

Hi,
David is correct in what he said.
I sold my motorhome with a built in garage last year.
The garage was a wonderful storage space but unfortunately I have problems with my spine and getting into ,and leaving the bed caused me some issues.
There are vans with fixed island beds.Central to the rear with space either side to get in and out.Others, like mine have a fixed bed to one side.
If your wife needs help into bed I would look at the island type bed.
As David pointed out, I would check the interior for steps and also the size of the toilet/shower room, some are very small and I am thinking if you had to assist your wife, you might find them restrictive.
It sounds like you have friends with either motorhomes or caravans.
Perhaps it would be a good idea to have them accompany you on your first trip.
I wish you both well.
Happy camping.
Regards,
Greg

A couple just down from me have a motorhome as their only vehicle and in the last year, one half of the couple has needed a wheelchair. They contacted Motability to see if they could offer advice (they're not eligible for one of their vehicles) and have had some very useful info from them in what to look out for and aids that can help getting in/out of vehicles.

Thanks for your replies.

The MH that we are looking to rent is from Justgo in Bedfordshire, it has an island bed and my wife found it ok to get around.

Justgo have an offer on whereby you pay £499 for a couple and they fly you out to Italy to drive one of their new units back to Blighty over 10 days. Very tempting but we need to try one out first I think

Cheers BB
