Oh help me, I'm about to do something I may regret!!!!!!!

I have now bought a TV & an inverter. The TV adapter's power consumption is 230v 50W, the adapter output is 12v 4a, the inverter is 12v 300W (max) output. I have a 70amp leisure battery.

I have paid a fortune to a local campervan converter to take direct leads (2mm core wire, about 3m runs) from the leisure battery & car battery to a 30amp rated 3-way toggle switch (so I can run from either source) and then into the inverter. I got the van back on Thursday and the workshop told me 'the battery's a bit flat it'll need a charge'. So I left the van on hook-up for 24hours & then drove 100 miles on Friday to get to a weekend campsite with no hookup to find that the battery had not charged at all & we had to make do with one light, which was desperately hanging on & the control panel battery meter well into the red by Sunday.

I took the battery out last night & charged it on a seperate mains battery charger. I used a voltmeter that told me it had a charge of about 14.4v. I tried running the TV through the inverter. It lasted about 20m mins and then the 10v auto-shut off kicked in. Shouldn't I get about 14 hours of TV time from my battery given the figures above? Certainly more than 20 mins! I have left all the lights on in the van for another hour or so, the voltmeter is telling me the battery has a charge of 11.9v & the control panel battery level indicator is almost into the red again. Is my battery shot? It was perfectly good when the van went to the workshop or is there a problem with the work done. Why didn't the battery charge up from the vans charger? This is desperate as I'm supposed to be going away for a week on Thursday, most of it with no prospect of hook-up.

Any help desperately & greatly recieved!

Brett

Hi Brett

The biggest problem is that the wiring you have had done is useless, even with a mint 110 Ah battery fully charged by a proper charger (ie none of yer Zig or plug in systems rubbish) Why people who have no idea at all what they are doing, do this kind of work I will never know.

for 300 Watts over 3 meters you needed 16mm square Cable to get an acceptable 3% voltage drop, smaller will do if closer.

Have you got a multimeter?

can you wire the invertor near to your leisure battery?  is there anyway to pm me?

Phone would be easiest but not sticking my number up here.

You battery may be dead or it may not, the voltage drop is causing the early cut out but its not that simple, they may have screwed the split charging with messing, any muppet who uses 2mm wire over that length for that amount of ampage should not be changing a fuse.

Get in touch.

PS the worst is that its potentially a fire hazard too.
