We haven't been able to get out and about in our Trigano Tribute for a few months. Tried to turn over the engine this morning and the battery is completely flat. The leisure battery is fully charged (we have plugged it into the mains via the cable most of the day) but the engine still won't start.
Anyone know what we're doing wrong?

Many motorhomes will charge leisure battery while plugged into EHU but not engine battery. So if van has been standing for months without engine battery on charge then it will have gone flat & you hope it is still ok because batteries do not like being left in discharged state.

If you have home start on your breakdown cover call them out & they will give you a jump start then take van on run for 20miles & all should be ok. Otherwise charge battery overnight with separate battery charger & it should start in morning.

If you find battery has gone flat again in a few days then it has not survived being left discharged & you will have to buy a new battery.

On some chargers there is a switch that lets you choose which battery the EHU charges. Might be worth a look

You need to charge the starter battery as Opensauce as already said and then check it in a few days to see if it has lost charge.

On our motorhome I fitted a battery master device which charged the starter battery when the leisure battery was fully charged. When on hook up on site this kept the starter battery fully charged even when the engine was not started for several weeks, when parked at home the solar panel charged the leisure battery and charged the starter battery. The device only took a few minutes to fit as there is only 1 wire to connect to each battery, I took the battery master off when I sold the van and I'll be selling it soon. If you have a look at the Votronic battery master on the Roadpro website you'll see the one I have but no doubt others are available from other manufacturers.

Thank you Rob! I really appreciate that. We're a bit new to all this still. Life just took over for a while there and we have been remiss about remembering to give the van a run.

We have insurance with Safeguard and they were brilliant. I phoned them just after 5:30pm and they'd sent someone out within the hour. So it was jump started and then my hubby drove it for about 30 mins. So we will give it a run every day and see how it goes. The worst, I suppose, will be a new battery 😞. However, there ate worse things in life and it's our own fault!

I had a Trigano 650 for 2 years and yes the vehicle battery will not be charged by the mains as in the case of the leisure battery, but as has been already suggested I fitted a battery to battery charger and it worked fine, to the point that now is fitted to my IH TIO, do an ebay search for TRIK-L start, they do two versions, go for the higher out put one, it is   case of fit and forget, you can get more expensive ones but at the end result is the same

I'm going to invest in one of those! Thank you. We have the van another 30 minute run today. I'm going to check it again on Tuesday as I just won't have time tomorrow.

Sorry to be a bit dense, but does the battery-to-battery charger stop the battery from dying when the van is idle for a while then?

If you have Tribute 669, when on EHU it will charge the engine and leisure battery at the same time. If you left it too long standing, the engine battery may have died. You can see the state of both the engine and leisure batteries on the control panel.

That's what my husband was convinced of and we fell out about it lol! Oh dear.....
What he couldn't figure out is there something we need to switch or select to make sure it is charging both batteries? Under the dinette, there's a little box with a switch in it.....I'm going to get a photo of it and figure out how to post it....be back shortly!

If the worse happens and you need to purchase a new battery I can thoroughly recommend 'Tanias Batteries'. Their customer service is brilliant, prices extremely good (Bosch 100aH for £118 inc next day delivery). At least shop around, some garages quoted twice this amount. Good luck. David

We bought our motorhome in 2010, it is on a "53" plate and as far as I know the leisure battery is same one installed by Auto Sleeper when built.
We do have a solar panel which keeps it topped up but the best way to look after a battery is not to drain it down too much. I have installed LED's and they take little power, and by 9:30 the next morning the solar panel has topped the battery up again. We do spend many nights in the year without hookup and never had a problem.
