Hi there.

Brand spanking new newbie here so go easy... :)

We have just taken collection of our motorhome, a Lunar Roadstar 726.

We have taken it away for 2 nights as a bit of a try with our 3 girls and have had the time of our lives. We really used the trip as a bit of a learning trip to see what we need and what we do.

Before we set off we filled the water tank, something I shall not be doing again. The weight of the water has such a dramatic effect on the handling we shall travel with water in a water holder for the journey and fill up on site from now on.

When we arrived on site, we noticed everyone had a water roller which is when I realised that maybe the internal tank on our motorhome isn't very big so I shall be getting a water roller. One thing I wasn't quite sure of is, we have a hose pipe with a cable which at one end both fit into what I think is a pump. I was told that the cable plugs into the van just below the fresh water in and pop the hose into the inlet and this will pump water from the bucket into the internal tank. Is this the case and does it sound right or should there be a way of taking water from the bucket into the van without it going into the internal tank?? -if that makes any sense....

What I did find amazing is the sense of community from other motorhomes. On our drive we were waved at by every one that went past, and on site everyone was really sociable, which makes me know think I should have asked someone about the water - but hey ho..

Hope its not a rambling email... really enjoyed learning and am really keen to learn some more, its just the water for some reason seems to be baffling me. I think Im probably over complicating it, but hopefully someone can help.

No I think the pump is just to fill your tank as it would be heavy to lift the roller thingy up. I'm surprised you said the full water tank effects handling, our tank is 90L and there's no noticeable difference in handling, even the 100kg scooter makes no difference, probably just a bit slower.

I found it just a bit more liable to sway around bends but that could be just because Im not used to it maybe. So the pump would just drop into the aqua roll and the internal tank can be filled like that.. brill.. thankyou!

Only travel with a half tank of water or less, enough to keep you going for tea or coffee etc and fill up when on site. the more water you carry the more weight the van has to 'pull' and more fuel you use up.
when on site use your hosepipe to fill up via the water filler.

We only used to carry enough water to use en route and then we filled up at the camp site. If the van felt a bit unstable it might be worth checking your tyre pressures.

I would expect the fresh water tank to be getting on for 100 litres. I wouldn't clutter it up with Aquarolls and things you probably don't need just yet. If you haven't got a handbook for the habitation I would contact Lunar to get one, that should answer most of your questions.

Hi Duncan,
Welcome to the forum.
As Barry points out, don't be scared to ask questions,everyone on here was in your position at one time.
Personally when considering overloading I would try and manage without the water roller. Fill up when arriving on site, I just put enough in to prime the system and test it before we go. If your hose won't reach a tap carry a 5 litre watering can (kept just for that purpose) to keep topping up. Those rollers will take quite a bit of weight off your allowance.
Great you had such a good time.
I would also keep a diary as you go, make note of what you could have left behind, what you should have taken and didn't, you will soon be up and running.
My other advice would be ,have a checklist before travelling either way.
Gas off.
Roof vents shut.
Feet up (if you have them)
Fridge set to 12v off the van.
Windows secure
Ramps onboard,
anything that will cause distraction whilst driving.
Enjoy your motorhome.

Fairly new myself and been in your position too dougie212. We now try travel with only half a tank, more if we know we are having a non site stopover. We also learned very quickly to take different hose connectors . We do carry a 25l plastic water carrier just in case we can't get access to fill up via the hose/tap, and this has been enough for us and very useful. It's also light to carry when empty. It's rectangular and so stores easy in the garage area.

You'll get some great help and advice on this site, it's my go to forum for all things motorhome!
