I've done a search and can't see anything about this, so apologies if it's a bit of a taboo!
I'm looking to buy 2nd hand from a dealer imminently, around the 20k price point. Are they generally open to negotiating on price or not? I note some places actually have "cash price" under the figure on display, I guess to discourage even asking. I only know one person who's bought 2nd hand from a dealer & they didn't even ask, on the other hand a close relative negotiated around 10% off a new van (at a show) but they could play several vendors against each other.

We've bought two vans second hand from dealers. My husband is into haggling but, rather than haggle the price, he will haggle the price given for ours in px or he'll go for things to be included - solar panel fitted or Gaslow system, a year's road tax, stuff like that. We may have to pay the asking price but get more for it.

Hi,
I think most dealers now are confident of selling their stock quite quickly as demand is now massive.
Always worth trying for a discount but my own advice would be, not to aim for a straight off cash discount but maybe negotiate a discount on other items . Discount on a gas cylinder as they tend to supply vans without, perhaps discount on an awning or extend the warranty.
I would advise before you go for any van ,sit down and write a list of requirements you expect from it.
Many people pay a lot of money, and 20K is a lot of money only to find the van is totally wrong for them.
As I said earlier ,motorhomes and caravans are moving quickly, it's so tempting after missing out on a few sales to dive in and buy the first available.
It really pays to have a layout and van in mind as it can be a huge disappointment if you get it wrong.

I think you have to appreciate that there is more wriggle room when buying new either in the price or a part exchange. This is less so with a secondhand model but I would have thought that it is always worth asking, there are only two answers!!! I think Greg's ideal is a worthwhile one if there are things you are going to buy as extras.

Thanks for the replies. Good tip about trying to get more-for-the-price😎 tho I've a lot of kit I can reuse and no part ex, not worth offering anyway😂 I've been thru a cycle of small camper, TTs & caravan over the decade & pretty confident about the layout/preferences for the base vehicle. Those that have come up near me just haven't been quite right so am at the point of visiting further flung dealers to look at specific vans - tho perhaps best not to let on to the salesmen about that! I know it's not the ideal time of year to be a buyer but it's handy to know it doesn't seem there's a definite margin built in for assumed negotiation.

If you find one that is suitable try saying: "It is just what we are looking for but unfortunately it is a little above our budget" and see what they say.
They will probably ask what your budget is and then you can tell them a price that you would be happy to pay. It may be the start of polite negotiations.

How desperate are you to buy that particular van or is the dealer wanting to sell it?

The strongest bargaining ploy is the ability to walk away from the deal.

From your own research what is a reasonable price for the unit? That is your price and explain that to the dealer.

Remember he has to make a profit on what he bought it for, otherwise he becomes an ex-dealer.

Then there's end off month targets for the salesman to achieve, they maybe willing to do a deal just for the commission .
