Diesels are well known to be better on fuel than petrols and that's what it all boils down to isn't it, .......but with the powers that be now doing an about turn on diesels what does the future hold? I personally feel that they're going to start hitting diesel users, another excuse to raise a bit more tax!. Maybe a petrol with a LPG conversion, but then how many miles are you going to do per year? my motorhome was 11 yrs old when I bought it 2 yrs ago & had done just 14500 miles! so I would think most of us don't clock up to many miles each year do we.

It felt good......so I dun it!                     I'm not old I'm .........forgot what I was gonna say.

Diesel - if possible.... The economy is so much better than petrol.
However, if you are wanting to go into an environmental zone, you might find that you need at least a Euro 4 engine.

Also your starting price is £6k, but what is your top price? You might find a high spec diesel is on the expensive side.

Some years, I didn't do many miles in our MH, but that's a waste of a good van. I'm now doing 4-5k miles a year.

For your budget you would be better finding a caravan to tow behind the car you probably already have. £6k will not buy you much more than a project petrol or diesel. Be careful of coachbuilds at that price could be riddled with damp or panel van conversions check for rust. You could buy something at that price but you need to be good at diy. It's not worth paying anybody to fix it or costs will spiral out of control.

All that matters at that price is overall condition but diesel will be cheaper to run. A petrol coachbuilt probably won't even do 20mpg.

Thanks all for for replying, you have cleared up one or two points. Buying a tow van is not really an option as our car wouldn't give us much scope so really we would have to buy a tow car as well,so I possibly will hold fire for a bit, save a bit more money by which time we should know how hard the government are going to punish diesel users

The reaction against diesel will probably hit older vehicles first. Have a quick look at Euro specs for diesels. Euro IV spec is probably where you would start with a £6K budget. If you buy diesel , get the latest model you can. For about £6k you could put together a Euro V spec NV200 like ours, for example. The latest Euro VI spec vehicles are very clean. Some use Ad-Blue additive to burn off more pollutants. so you could Google that too if you plan to go over budget. Hope this helps.
