Hi..
There was a roof tent query not so long back...
titled- "Roof tents" by "Mark Warren" - 8th June, in the "Camping and Caravan equipment" section.
(I tried to post a link to it but it failed.. )
I seriously considered getting one some years back (for use at music festivals), the idea was to get a Hilux or similar..
(I was "seduced" by photos of my mates rufty-tufty looking set-up on the roof of a 110 he used to own).
but even then, the general consensus seemed to be that a "normal" tent was far more versatile (and a lot cheaper!)
We saw about 2011 an 'Air Top' on a L.R Defender. It was a very nice piece of kit. Looked the part and functioned well. The couple using it were from Germany, they had come to the UK for the Dorset Steam Rally.
I have had a look of Goggle Box, and they are still making them. ( More importantly...I actually remembered the name correctly.) I bet the are expensive, never bothered to look though. Not sure I would enjoy sleeping that high from the ground. But I guess they are used in the 'bush', deserts, forest's and beach. Very versatile indeed.
