We have had a letter from Fiat saying the cambelt should be changed as the Van is coming up to 5 years old but it has less than 10K on the clock - should it still be done?

Yes - belts and tensioners age and should be changed as per the schedule.

Most cambelt failures are as a result of another component failing which then destroys the cambelt and potentially wrecks the engine.

I've only had the issue once and a tensioner bolt failed, thankfully repairs weren't too bad - just top end rebuild, rather than a whole new engine.

Have the water pump changed at the same time.

It's not worth the risk not having it done. I know two people who had cam belts go and they both now make sure they are changed on time.
