Hi, we fish and must have an awning for the storage of the kit. We have 2, a small and HUGE. You do not have to attach your awning to your van, nobody is forced to do this. Drive away awnings do not need a van to hold them up. The very name of them ensures that if you do attach to a van, and need to detach for whatever reason, they stand alone. It will still be there when you come back. Even our huge one can be erected to run along side the van to prevent the funny looks from other campers who think that you could be encroaching into their paid for area. An awning provides extra space,the setting out your table and chairs to eat out of the van and it is raining, cooking, storage, sleeping. The size of your van will allow on the smaller pitch you mention, for you to 'park' your awning behind it, along side it, or in front of it, (providing you can back off of your allotted space.) We have 2 as I stated, both are Vango Air Beam products, and if I get 'MY' way, shall soon own a Vango Air Hub as well . The weather is not always good in UK...so get on YouTube and watch some videos of erecting tents /awnings/ etc. They can be very entertaing / educating when it is raining. Good Hunting.
