After camping in a tent for over 10 years, we'll be collecting out first campervan (a T5) at the weekend.

While it does have a lot of storage compared to most others we've seen it will take me a while to figure out the best way to pack it (for 2 adults and 2 small children). But, as we wont be doing any serious camping until the spring I have plenty of time to get sorted.

Any tips on how to make the most of the space and especially how to pack clothes.

Also tips on any best buys in terms of space saving gear.

Plan on getting one of those tow bar carriers for bulky items like awning.

We tended to use much the same sort of packing as when we were in the tent, but there were only 2 of us not 4.
We searched our house for plastic crates that fitted perfectly in the spaces we had. And we don't take water for the sink as we use campsite facilities, which saves a lot of space too.

I found a rigid bag which drops perfectly into the wardrobe space below the hanging rail, which takes soft things like underwear and T shirts. Hang up as much as possible. OH uses the back wardrobe, he keeps his things in drawstring bags. Shoes live in boxes under the bed at the back.

There's a couple of recent threads on this topic that might be helpful to you.

As you say, you won't be using it for camping till spring, you will have plenty of time to optimise the packing. Till then, I assume that you will be using it for day trips etc.. and so you will find out where all the annoying rattles come from!

In our case, these mostly come from the pots& pans, cups and glasses. I made boxes and clips (to fit the cupboards) which held the various items in place. We also bought a cheap pack of microfibre cloths to pack round loose items. Mrs. L made a cloth cutlery roll to keep the knives & forks etc. together.

I said in a previous post that after 30 odd years, we still take too many clothes to cater for the changes in the weather.

I'm sure you will soon get the hang of it and enjoy many nights in your new van.

I guess it depends on your set up, but ours has a rib bed which means I can get a couple of those collapsible crates in the back. One fits my gray water bottle, camping gaz box stove (back up in case gas bottle runs out) and 5 litre Jerry can to fill my on board tank. The other has a pair of ramps which fit perfectly on the diagonal, 25m hook up cable on the gap on one side, space on the otthe other butane cans etc. Space for small oil filled radiator alongside.

Rest of our stuff is in a combination of plastic boxes and crates sourced to fit the various available spaces with soft stuff like sleeping bags and the like carried on the rear "shelf" created by the rib bed.

We have an old T camper van. I use the carpet gripper you buy in rolls at places like Pound shop and cut these to fir on narrow shelves above Windows . These shelves I use for the small containers you can buy and fill them with tea, coffee etc so near to hand. The rest I keep to lay out on the floor to hold shopping bags after supermarket visits and to hold washing up folding basket/ crate.i have screwed cup hooks into the sides below the narrow shelves mentioned before to hang mugs. We don't have a portaloo so that cupboard holds saucepans and a one ring electric hob which we use to cook on ( we pay for camp site electric hook up so why use our gas bottle?) You can buy two ring hobs. Cup hooks are also used behind the cab Sears to hang waterproofs for easy access. I have made a hanging posket( well 3 pockets in one which hangs on the back of the passenger seat and holds first aid stuff, the next day's underwear! And other bits and bobs. Books go,under the passenger seat, room for quite a few. tale and 2 folding chairs and 2 folding stools fold up behind the driver's seat and passengers seat with the use of bungee straps to hold them steady.we don't use the sink so that gets filled with tinned/ packet food. Longer clothes, dresses, my husbands trousers hang in the wardrobe but shorts and tee shirts are folded in small crates which we put behind the back seat ( we took out the removeable shelf that usually fits there.) The drawer under the bed holds shoes, bottles of wine, boules set, and anything else! The storage cupboard with lift up lid holds the food with plastic crates which lift in and out and hang on the supports inside. after many years with our van, Alfie (!) we have got packing it just about right for us but with children on board it will be a bit more of a squeeze! Enjoy!

There's generally lots of room for storage - sometimes you just have to think outside the box.

Anti-slip mats (the roll stuff as above). Made a shelf that sits behind the hob/sink (and sits almost in the window sill) that holds tea, coffee, oats etc. Cup hooks above the same window, old (unused) waste pipe cut into vertical lengths to hold cutlery, with plates and dishes held in pouches attached to the wall.

Large storage box under the bed (on drawer runners) that holds food, towels etc. Awning and 5 camp chairs either side of the storage box under the bed - permanently there and can unfold the bed without disturbing them. That's before I even use the cupboards under the sink/hob and main cupboard at the back. We have a portaloo stored as well (but have to put it outside to use it ).

Be creative, make sure you only take enough cups/plates/cutlery for the people in the van (we have 5 of everything - just in case we all go away) and don't be afraid to try things and change your mind. The more times you go out, the more things you find that work.

Cheers

Tony
