Hi, I have a 2004 compass avantgarde on a boxer swb chassis with the 2 litre hdi diesel engine which gives out around 86 BHP. This can be a challenge on long climbs but we always get there! I want to buy a scooter to take with us on our travels and would like to hear from anyone who has or has had the same van and either used a scooter rack or towed a trailer of around 250 kg to find out if it has any significant effect on performance. I have an Armstrong towbar fitted but don't know if the chassis would take the weight of a rack and whether it would affect driving with the swb chassis. Thanks

I would have thought you would have to be very careful with a rack as it could/would overload the rear axle. Something you tow I would have thought would be the better option. Perhaps one of those trailers with two wheels where you load the scooter across the back of the motorhome?

I'd agree with David, your rear axle's available capacity is key here..and of cause the *overall weight of the vehicle.
(*once the van is loaded for going away, would the weight of a scooter,and the rack, not take you over your gross weight?..I think the swb 2.2 2007 Avantgarde we had was only 3300kg?)

If it wouldn't,then this is an enquiry/calculation form, that may be worth just sending off?
(although it'd also be worth having scout around online to see if there are any other "instant" calculators?)
