Hi
I have been looking at the Peugeot symbol, but in my affordable range are mostly 1997 to around 2001 ish. Would be grateful for any feedback on these van, max Milage, what is known as faults. Either diesel or petrol. Any help please. Thanks.
Have a good look underneath, Iv'e just got ride of a Peugeot Boxer 2004 ended up been a money pit.
Final straw was the rusted chassis / body work underneath, up until about 100,00 miles it was OK then it was one thing after the other.
I bought it with 54000 on the clock and got rid with 173000. but it did end up being a work horse.
One of the re occurring problems were the front strut top mounting bearings. went through 3 set, you will hear them start to groan and the steering won't self centre.
Lovely driving position and I would have another one tomorrow if needs be.
Perhaps I've been lucky with my 2003 Symbol as Ive had no trouble in the 2 yrs I've owned it - and there is no rust anywhere. I have 47,000 on the clock and has the 2.2 litre diesel engine which I get an average of 35 miles per gallon on a long run. I love my Symbol and it is an ideal layout as far as I'm concerned.
I don't know what your budget is but I paid £17,000 when I bought it with 42,000 on the clock and full service history.
My last van was on a 1998 Peugeot Boxer. Very reliable - only engine problem was a faulty water temp sensor.
I agree that you should look under the chassis and esp. the body mounting points for rust. Also check the front cross member which is, I believe, is prone to corrosion.
Only MoT problems were with corroded brake pipes.
------------- Two drifters off to see the world.
I'm tired of reality, so I'm off to look for a good fantasy.
Thank you, reckon I get it looked at by Rac or similar. It's still a lot of money to hand out and get stitched up. I be spending a lot of time in it so want it as best as possible. Does any know how much fuel the on board heaters use, I guess they only work on diesel.? . Thanks again.
Hi,
Very wise to take a qualified person with you.
Also having owned an older Boxer they were also prone to rusting aound the lower windscreen corners. Also where the Capt stated.
Seen quite a few where people had not done a proper job and just filled up to and around the windscreen seal with obvious results.
Having said that it was a good bit of kit.
Good luck.
Regards,
Greg
Thanks for reply, am mechanical minded, but I have no idea where these vans are vulnerable. So hopefully having it looked at will save me lots of trouble.
