HI Has anyone heard off or have 1 fitted, a diesel powered air heater in a camper. i am looking to fit a heater in my new vw transporter as we attend dog shows and it can get pretty cold sitting waiting around.

Not heard of Planar, but Eberspacher or Webasto diesel heaters are often fitted to boats and trucks. They are supposed to be very good. You can also get lpg blown-air heaters, such as those made by Propex.

i have fitted the eberspacher heaters in trucks before,good heaters but pricey,the planar can be got for half the price, is smaller to fit in the drivers seat box. not touching lpg .

We had a webasto in our old motorhome and it worked very well.
It really needs ehu as it will run down the leisure battery fairly quickly

Speaking from experience I used to drive a mobile crane with a diesel heater fitted.one big problem is that the crane ran on a 12volt system and not 24volts which the heater is designed to use,thus you had to keep the engine running,or Finnish up with a flat battery so really defeated the object a little hope this helps Arthur

Both Eberspacher and Planar have 12v heaters.

Plenty of good reviews for legit Planar heaters on the web.

Just make sure you get it from authorised dealer with 2 year European warranty, such as listed on autoterms website, otherwise likely to be a Chinese rip-off.

At around £700 fully fitted with a timer compared to around £1000 for an Eberspacher fitted with timer, I know which option my wallet prefers.

I believe the Planar is simpler but a bit noisier, tend to be used by the Russian Lorry drivers in Siberia, less to go wrong. Some say they drain the leisure battery more.

I found the Eberspacher in my van too noisy to use except in remote locations. I'm not sure if mine is particularly noisy, or I'm just more aware of it. It's noisier than my oil fired central heating boiler at home.

However, it is a good heater.

Dont know why you dont want lpg, I have a whale blown air heater in my van with under slung lpg tank, very warm, cheap to run and easy on the leisure batterys, also has the facility to switch to run off electricity when on hook up. Had similar system on a previous T5.

it is a vw shuttle and will have dog cages in rear, i need a very small heater that fits inside drivers seat box and at £469 for a diy fit its a good price. no room for a gas heater

Another alternative to the Planar or the Webasto / Eberspecher could be the MC Airo 2 , get very good reviews, and parts for servicing etc are much cheaper than some other manufacturers.

Genuine question, as just curious:

Do these sorts of heaters require(or greatly benefit from)an additional battery?
Because I just wondered what sort of "umph" they required on start up, and the long term effect that would have on a less than tip top vehicle starter batter if the vehicle was just sitting, with the engine not running?

We have a Websto dual top. It runs from the leisure batteries. We have two 110Ah leisure batteries and a 100w solar panel.

It does require some oomph on start up but after that runs fine and quietly. Longest we’ve used it on diesel is about 24 hours on a sunny but cold day, mainly on low power once the van heated up.

I don’t know a lot about them but after having an Eberspacher on our last van (with a similar battery/solar panel setup) which would drain the batteries in a few hours the Webasto seems a lot better.

finally got my new to me transporter home thru the week and was under it today fitting a tow bar. what a shock i got when i spotted a webasto heater already fitted, and as a bonus, it works.

Ours is ok. We sleep with it on, with the fan on low.

I believe that some have an extra silencer that cuts down on external noise but don’t know if ours does. It’s certainly a whole lot quieter than the Eberspacher in our last van that sounded like a jet taking off.
