Hi
I have just sold my static caravan so that we can return to motorhoming we had the static for 7 years and prior to that have had several home built campers.
Now I would like to buy a ready converted van. We like the look of the autosleeper duetto on a transit base but these are out of our price range. Looking to spend about £4000.
There seems to be a lot of Talbot based autosleepers that are within that range. We need a 4 berth with toilet, shower and blown air heating.
Can any one give me any advice on these, ie should I go for petrol or diesel? Are spares readily available for them? Any thing particular I should look out for?. I know they seem to suffer a lot with rust.
Any advice on these vans greatly appreciated.

May I suggest you read a thread posted by 'Frody' in this section on 22/2/2018...Subject Motorhome. The age is against your choice and the advice in the thread I mentioned is just the same for you.

It looks like Frody had a rather larger budget than £4k.
The early Talbots were OK, generally reliable .. BUT ...
Without power steering, they were like a tank to drive, they were grossly underpowered and very thirsty. On top of that, the gear change was terrible (although this could be improved)

While toilet & shower were fairly standard, blown air heating was not. You could retro-fit a Westabo or Eberspacher if you have a diesel vehicle - but at a high cost. There may be LPG versions available.

So, for a low budget, the Talbot could be a possibility, but for £4k - well, you can't really expect all the bells & whistles of a modern van.

We reluctantly sold our H reg Talbot Autosleeper last year.
It was a 4 berth with air blown heating as you describe.
In the winter the heating system wasn't good enough and we had to carry another heater.
The gear box was absolutely shot and parts to repair it are just not available any more, so it had to go and it had only done about 70,000 miles.
Strangely the gear change only started playing up once the engine was fully warmed up, so if you test drive one, make sure you drive it for a good few miles.

At the age of MH for that price, rust is a major problem. It's the main reason that we sadly parted with our Autosleeper Clubman.
PS it was 23 years old, the dealer gave us £5K but he would obviously sell it for more.
