Hi.
I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for transporting my kayak on Our motorhome.
Our Motorhome is a 2 berth with solar panels on the roof. No roof rack.
No way to get it inside.
We have a really strong looking bike rack on the rear and I was wondering if it would be strong enough to carry my 9 foot kayak.
Motorhome is 7 foot 6 inch wide. Approx 8 foot 6 inch to outside of wing mirrors.
Was thinking about fixing kayak to bike rack at an angle so it didn't overhang sides.
Cheers
Hi
It should be possible to obtain a weight/load limit for which ever make/model of rack you have..but of cause that would only apply the actual rack structure and would not necessarily the relate to the van wall it's bolted to..
But first off, I'd be checking on what available rear axle capacity you have.
..and if you had plenty(or enough), rather than hanging it off the van wall, I'd be looking at fabricating a chassis mounted metal rear "bumper" type arrangement, that included framework that would locate/support the kayak.. ?
Pepe is right Corni, it is all about the rear (wall) of the van. After finding out what the bike rack will take in weight, you then have to weig the boat LOL.
We bought a brand new Elddis , and then asked to have a bike rack fitted they said NO!. The van wall was not strong enough to take it, never mind what was going onto it. Come back with the info and I am sure help will be here for you.

I've binned the idea about taking kayak away with us. Didn't give motorhome walls a thought. Thanks for all your advice.
Hi
Even if you could have carried the kayak, I would've thought that unless someone had a large MH, with ample external storage(maybe a "garage" model or a roof box?,) then they'd probably struggle to find enough space for all of the associated kit anyway..?
(especially if it has just come out of an icky river.. )
We toured around Scotland last year with two kayaks that we had to get into our 24ft motorhome through the side bedroom window!
They went in over the fixed bed and down onto the floor of the van and by the end of the holiday we were experts at it!!
I am sure we got some funny looks from other campers though!
We did of course make sure they were well cleaned and that the bed had a cover over it during the manoeuvre!
We decided to invest in an inflateble kayak which fit nicely into the garage along with the bikes. It takes only a couple of minutes to inflate and is very robust. Used it on rivers and in the sea.
