Thinking of buying a W reg VW clubman 2.4 diesel 2 berth.It's done 78,000 is very clean and seems in good condition.The asking price is £16,500.At first I thought this a bit steep but after looking on line I'm not so sure as a lot of similar vans are priced around this, although some are cheaper.
If anyone's got any advice I'd be very grateful.Only had tents before so new to all this.

Autosleeper used to have a very good reputation for build quality, but later ones that I looked at were disappointing. However, the Clubman looks like a good "punt" and the price reflects the popularity of

I trust it is the Turbo version of the engine as the non-turbo is somewhat underpowered. Even the turbo diesel isn't powerful by modern standards.

Check that the engine has been maintained to correct schedule - cam belt changed, glow plugs & injectors OK etc.. The body is I believe, a GRP monocoque, so should be relatively impervious to water ingress, providing it hasn't been damaged.

W reg - 1990?? 18 years old - getting on a bit, but if it's been well looked after, it should give quite a few more years.

Isobel - after my experience with elderly camper vans, I'm going to avoid in future! Prices are just stupid, in my opinion, and you may end up with a liability that is a constant source of worry and expense.

I'm sticking with a tent for now, but when finances allow I may buy a low mileage minibus only a few years old (~£10K) and do a simple conversion myself - much more cost effective, and I'll have a modern reliable vehicle that should be good for years.

Either that or I'll buy a bell tent + stove for winter use...

It may/would also be worth asking about probable age related issues on a specific VW T4 forum because after all, it's the base vehicle that can/will cause the most problems when it's getting on a bit..
(okay, "habitation" appliances and bits'n'bobs may need attention or fail but they can do that at any age..)

VW Ts always tend to fetch a premium, as do Autosleepers, so the two together are never going to be considered cheap...

I tend to agree though,having gone around in circles ourselves over a 13-14 year period(tents>campervan>motorhomes>-back to a"camping-van" & tents),for a given amount of money, I'd opt for a newer base vehicle and then carry out simple conversion..

12-15-18k plus, is a helluva lot for 15-20 year old vans, that have a few cupboards and cushions in!

We loved our Autosleeper dearly and I still haven't bonded with the new MH.
It had done 100k miles, L reg (1993), we got £5,500 for it from another dealer that ours dealt with.
RUST at the cab & floor pan is the reason we moved it on - we did a lot of work for MOTs but it was getting ever more expensive.
Zero damp, well maintained (new tyres, glow plugs, alternator etc).
We hope someone is having happy holidays in it now!

2.4 diesel is non turbo. Road performance will not be up to modern standards. As pointed out by other poster. Probably not viable to pay good money for a motorhome of this age. Save up for something much newer.

The 2.4 Clubman is quite an economical van steady top gear use will give you 30mpg upwards. As Opensauce has pointed out the 2.4T4 is non turbo. There are still loads about that bring decent prices for the sellars but do look out on the cab for rust. You will get plenty of info on the auto sleepers owners forum

Likes been mentioned , I would look into buying a more modern base vehicle, plenty van converters about and you choose what you think would be best for you.
Going down this road, you do end up with a new conversion and can add to the spec has your budget allows.
