We are thinking about towing a small car behind our motorhome on an A frame from Tow Bars 2 Tow Cars Ltd and hoping to travel all over Europe. We saw the A frame on a camper pitched next to us recently, and the owner said it worked brilliantly. We had originally considered putting a small car on a trailer, but with the combined weight of the car and trailer it would be too much for our van. We have researched it a little and some people think it is illegal in some countries, particularly Spain. Has anyone had experience of towing a car on an A frame throughout Europe?

Most definitely illegal in Spain and Portugal , Spanish traffic law dictates that any car not being driven must either be on a purpose built approved car trailer or on a recovery truck .
If you choose to ignore the law in Spain you run the risk of being fined and made disconnect and possibly having your car impounded by the Guarda Civil Traffico .
They have a Facebook page N332 which you can post questions and they generally answer in english within 5-6 hours.
Belgium is also a no no for A-framing as is Germany , not sure about France

Hi,
Over the past 5 years we have driven thousands of miles in France towing our Toyota IQ on an A Frame with never a problem - either from the car or the authorities.
We are off there again in 5 weeks with a different car. Just hope it towed as well as the last one!

A Frames are not strictly legal anywhere because they have not been type approved for use behind motorhomes. Some countries including the UK and France tend to turn a blind eye to their use. The other day, I can't remember where I saw that the UK Government are looking into the use of A-Frames, to what end I don't know. The only completely legal way to transport a car anywhere in Europe is a proper trailer. I think A-Frames are something of a UK phenomenon which I suspect leads to us not being in a position to push for their recognition.
