If I plug anything in without engine running, I get power but red light shows 'overloaded'. Gadgets are supposed to run, and be disconnected when battery low.

I didn't think red light used to come on. Should I be aware of anything indicated by it?

Thank you!

I would suggest that you give the members a bit more information, like

Outfit
Make of power supply unit
More details of exactly what the problem is

SsangYong Kyron 2.7.

Maplin 150w 12v inverter: input full load 15A, output 450w max 150w continuous.

Protection: pre-alarm 11.5v, shutdown 9.5v, red light indicates overload/short circuit.

Continuous power requirements: laptop 35-120w, table fan 10-15w, 12" electric fan 100w (laptop on own gives red light, 12" table fan on its own doesn't).

It looks like your continuous power requirements are in total 230w worse case and your output is 120w continuous so the inverter is overloaded and shuts down.
If the laptop at 120w is red lighting the inverter and the table fan at 15w is not it would appear that the inverter has a safety cutout at anything above 120w
Have you tried the fan at 100w to see if it red lights

In general it looks like you are trying to run too much off the inverter

What is an inverter?
What do you use it for?

Cheers

An inverter takes 12v from a supply and converts it to 220v.

"Continuous power requirements: laptop 35-120w, table fan 10-15w, 12" electric fan 100w"
is taken from box it came in.

I have 1 laptop & 1 12" table fan,
and only run 1 at a time.

No they are an add on item for use where you need to convert 12v 220v, like in a car where you need to stop and use a laptop say from your plug in cigarette lighter socket

Andrew as I said if the laptop runs at its max of 120w and you then plug in the desktop fan at 15w it would appear that your inverter has a safety cutout between 120w and 135w

I’m sorry but I’m not sure where this is going?
If you only plug in 1 appliance at any time what is the problem?
You said that when you plug in the laptop it’s ok but when you plug in the desk top fan the red light comes on hence your question why does the red light come on

Your Laptop is 12v, most likely your turning 12v in to 240 with your inverter to then have it returned back in to 12v by the transformer in the cable of the laptop. There are leads available that will let you cut all this waste of power out and connect your laptop to the 12v power outlet.

"laptop on own gives red light, 12" table fan on its own doesn't".

I spent a lot on a tiny adaptor for my laptop to plug in to the cigarette lighter directly, only for the cleaner to hoover it up! Then I bought another, but can't start that laptop at moment - so would need one for this laptop I've borrowed. I was hoping an inverter would solve every problem.

Someone on another site says
"Standard vehicle batteries are designed to supply large starting currents, not leisure use of a slow discharge.
The life of a vehicle battery used for leisure may be a little as 20 cycles which is what I suspect is your problem. I'd get the battery tested at your local battery specialist and if it has lost its "cold cranking Amps" (generally condemned if less that 75% of original declared capacity), I'd get a replacement dual purpose battery of the biggest Ah capacity that will fit in the compartment."
So I'll get it tested.
