We are new motorhome touring and I was wondering what would be the best anti-theft device.
On our motorhome we have a key lock and fob lock. The MH will not start unless you lock and unlock with the fob. (doesn't matter if you unlock with key MH will not start until you use fob ).
I was thinking about uncoupling the negative lead on the battery, but could this flatten battery or do other damage? We also have solar panels on roof.
Hi. Disconnecting the negative lead from the battery will not flatten the battery in itself, but it will stop it charging from the solar panels unless you connect the solar panels directly to the battery. (Or do the solar panels only charge the leisure battery if you have one?)
Disconnecting the battery can cause other problems though, such as wiping the stations memory in the radio, and depending on what radio you have you may need to enter a code number to get the radio to work again once you reconnect the battery.
Hi corni
If you disconnect the battery you will disable your alarm, assuming that you have one fitted.
I think the best deterrents are visual, you could take a look at a clutch claw, pedal boxes, disklok.
Nothing will stop somebody determined to take it but I think an opportunist will move on to an easier picking with nothing fitted.
If I am ever out of sight of my van I put a Disklok on the steering wheel.
Found best price was via Amazon, but make sure you order the correct size. Definitely agree with post above - make your van more difficult and less attractive to nick quickly.
Corni, I have had tracker and alarm fitted by mobile fitters carried out on my drive. If you are thinking of these please consider what will happen if it needs repair or service. Even in warranty they usually require a 'call out' fee and labour charges can be high. Out of warranty they can be disinterested. In retrospect I will now go to a local company. Good luck.
If you Google.
Vanbitz growler and strike back.
Possibly the best anti theft device on the market.
