Well you certainly don't need either if you are just going to use the vehicle privately. They are only needed on commercial vehicles used as commercial vehicles. If you are doing a conversion on it and re-register it as a private vehicle (motor caravan), I would say that you can simply remove them.

However, for simplicity you could just leave the tacho in place and use it as a speedo and clock. Just don't put a tacho disc in it, as won't need it. [afterthought] I presume it is the old style speedo type and not a digital tacho.

That complicates things a bit. I would advise you contact the DVLA, as until you register it as a motor caravan, they might see it as a commercial vehicle. Depending on when you passed your test you may not even be licenced to drive it if it's a 6 tonner. It will certainly need to have a commercial vehicle MOT until it has been converted. You will probably have to use the tacho as well when you bring it home. Once it has been converted and re-registered you will not need the tacho.

you should be able to fill in an exemption form to present to the tester .see numbers 4 & 30 that seem to apply, tax it as private hgv for cheap tax around £170 per year, it will probably need plating instead of MOT until converted after that and when registered as a motor caravan it will just need a class 4 mot same as a car.

ah link didn't work just copy and paste into search box it is a pdf file of the relevant form showing the possible exemptions.

as for removal of the tacho and speed limiter it could be possible but some are connected into the vehicle ECU so that might need sorting and reprogramming I didn't bother with mine as it seemed to much aggro and possible expense and to be honest no need to go any faster than mine is capable of (7.5 ton Iveco Eurocargo)

been through it all myself, when we bought the truck it was an ex prisoner transport unit with ten cells, classed as a PSV, It was still plated but I had no PSV licence so had it delivered by the seller. When I completed the conversion I went through the DVLA process of changing the body type to Motor Caravan on the log book and it came back with the taxation class as PHGV which then enabled me to book it in for the standard class 4 car mot albeit at a place that did truck mot's plating etc due to the vehicle size. By the way I never actually had to fill in or present any of the exemption forms as I never removed the speed limiter which is set at 63mph, and was never asked about the tacho as it was obvious to the tester that it was now not needed

Hi just came across this. Having a similar problem. Got a 2003 MAN LE with a limiter that’s now a motorhome. Did you manage to get yours shifted? Would appreciate any advice if you did.
Cheers

To remove the tacho on the daily ex-snap on van you must have the Iveco Easy scanner.
The tacho takes its signal from the speed sensor on the gearbox which goes via the BCM, so you need to have the gearbox speed sensor changed over so it's read by the ECU. Once that's done you can use the scanner to delete the tacho from the ECU which allows the speedo to carry on working.
