We have an intermittent problem with the french bed on Our Swift Escape 664, 19 times out of 20 we can lift it up and push it back down without any problems, on the 20th occasion the two gas struts seem to lock in the extended position and we can spend half an hour pulling and pushing the bed before it suddenly decides to work and we can push the bed down again. As we are fairly new to this I am wondering if it is something we are doing wrong. Has anyone else had similar problems or does anyone know of a reason why the gas struts should sometimes refuse to compress.
Hi
I can't say that I've come across that, usually it's the opposite, with the things not holding the bed up!
Does Jarring the bed upwards, before you try to lower it help?
I replaced ours(as they weren't able to support the bed once it had bedding on!)and they weren't that expensive.
Google- SGS engineering.
We eventually get it to go down after numerous attempts at yanking it up and then pushing down, I suspect there is just a knack to it. Thinking about it, we usually only open it to get at the dump valve on the Truma, which doesn't require it to be fully open, which would explain why it only happens occasionally.
Hi again..
As you say, maybe it's because the bed isn't raised very often, and it is this that has maybe caused some internal seals/components to occasionally "stick" ?...
Does it strike you as it's both the of struts doing it?
Seeing as you don't lift the bed very often, I just wondered if you could remove an offending one(or both?) and maybe just use a prop ?
(I used to use a little softwood batten prop, with a V notch in the ends, to fully hold up our French bed...although the actual "lift" was being assisted slightly by the weak gas struts).
