I am hoping some one can advise me on the subject of electrics. We have a 1996 Trafic campervan. If we have on site, and use EHU, do we need the switch 12volt option on ? Is it a case of EHU or 12volt input, or both. Really struggling to do the right thing. I must mention, that on one occasion, EHU was not available, and we ended up with a flat van battery. Thank you in anticipation.
Does your control panel have a a switch on the left hand side marked "car" "off" "caravan"? If so it needs to be on "caravan" when parked up so that the lights etc are taking power from your leisure battery and not from your engine battery. When you are on hook-up on a site, your power supply unit (PSU) acts like a transformer to step down from 240v to 12v which supplies the caravan lights etc. The PSU will also charge your leisure battery at the same time. Hope this helps.
Well explained. I would only add that in most cases, the EHU does not charge the starter battery. Some control panels do have this facility, but you'd have to check the handbook (if you have one).
