Hi All,
We are wondering which might be our best route between Bangor and Dover! We are from the north east and not familiar with the Midlands at all. We want to do the journey in 2 days with one night stopover somewhere easy! Its not a sightseeing journey but basically taking us between our sons birthday bash and the ferry to France! Any advice would be appreciated. P.S. The Ferry is booked mid afternoon on day 2 so we cant change that option!
a5 via Llangollen/shrewsbury. follow it down to crick where you join the m1 south then m25 and over Dartford crossing taking the m2 to dover as for somewhere to overnight, their is kelvedon hatch nr Brentford Essex would be my choice, giving you a good crack at dover the following day without having to rush off to early
Marge6 has given you possibly the best route.
I am unsure if you propose overnighting in Bangor for 'the party'. If so it could be a long haul to Dover? (as in day 2 the ferry) If it is day one from Bangor and overnight on the way from there I would imagine that Marge6 has done all but drive you down.
Crick is like a hub, as in all roads do lead south. Have a good look on maps (paper or internet) and you will then have to look for the over night campsite. Search on here (the uk campsite search area) and book in to the site of your choice on your chosen route. Mid afternoon ferry will be easy to achieve after a good nights sleep.
However I would like to be, and suggest you should also be, south of the river for my overnight stop. I have experience of both 'the tunnel' and the bridge being 'out' for travel for over 3 1/2 and 4 hours both at the same time. The Tunnel was closed, which put pressure onto the bridge, the outcome of which was nobody moving at all. 20th February 2019, is one I will certainly never ever forget. Please overnight having crossed the river, Tunnel or bridge, find a campsite the south side of it.
Good luck, and enjoy the vacation.
We went on the internet years ago and got a amazing bit of kit called a satellite navigation tool why don’t you get one, TomTom are one of the best.

Hi Conongirl
I regularly used to travel from Shropshie to Canterbury / Ashford with work, and always used :- M54, M6, M5, M40, M25' M20 route.
You do not have to worry about Dartford toll fees, and there is little difference in journey times.
Canterbury Park & ride is a good stopover prior to the ferry.
