My step failed, it was only the small gear and spline, as mine was just 2 years old I contacted Thule and they sent me a replacement FOC.
The new one has a been made using a stronger material.
How old is the step

I think I got a replacement spline from hill view awnings as a spare , about £28 , great service.
Have a look on I tube as there is a god video on how to replace it
