I just wish you could have something, just one thing, that can act as:
A sat nav, a GPS for hiking, a calculator, a camera, a photo album, a calendar, have music storage, a compass, a clock, an alarm, a video camera, a radio, a torch, an emergency locator, a recorder.
Be able to check my money, transfer money when abroad on holiday, be able to see and speak to my Grandkids whenever I like, book a last minute campsite/hotel, and pay for it. Look up vital information such as what to do in a medical emergency or accident, see what the weather is doing, get invaluable hints and tip by video, store my personal medical information should it be needed by a 3rd party.
Even send a letter or message in seconds, sent and receive documents, store documents like car insurance etc, store tickets for events or flights. To cap it all have the facility of a phone and a phone book, with all your contacts easy to find, even have the capability of contacting the emergency services without speaking.
Imagine all that in just one small device that fits in your pocket! Instead a thing that just makes, er, telephone calls.........One day, all this will be ours. 👍😀

And which can get lost, broken or stolen taking all of that with it. Think I'll stick with what I got thanks.
I've managed without it just fine for nearly 70 years.

Nice one Mike, it's good to have a bit of balance.
However the downsides are also considerable. Cost, vulnerability to hacking, short battery life, kids retreating into their bedrooms rather than interacting with real friends, perverts being enabled to target youngsters, facilitating thespread of fake news ...
I may get one at some stage but they are a mixed blessing in my view.

I quite agree Dave, it is good to have a bit of balance, and Mike makes a very good point. However as you say they are very much a mixed blessing. I wouldn't want all that on one device that could so easily get lost, broken, or stolen. Far too risky!
I would much rather spread things about a bit. My photo albums are spread over two computers, and backed up on a removable drive. That's apart from the ones I have as actual prints from years ago.
My music, apart from my CD and vinyl collections, is also on my computers with back-ups. I neither want or need to listen to music while I'm walking, but I like to listen in the car. A radio/CD player with a USB socket sees to that nicely. There's one in my caravan too.
Many people these days seem to have their whole lives on their smart-phones, and are understandably devastated when it gets destroyed or stolen. My choice is deliberate. I have an old phone that is just that. It does take pictures if I want, although I must admit they aren't great, but then I have a camera. If my phone got lost or broken it wouldn't be the end of the world. The worst thing would be the temporary loss of my address book, but that's backed up at home. The monetary value of my phone is nil, and I could get another for £20 or so. Nobody is going to steal it, they'd probably give it straight back if they did.
------------- Best Regards,
Colin
