Sorry to say that a Friday is going to be busy. You could use the A50 from Stoke across to the M1. Don't forget there are road works on the M1 around Milton Keynes as they convert it to a "Smart Motorway" I think you just have to be prepared to site tight and go with the flow. Even 50 mph is better than no mph!
The M6 M1 and M25 have road problems all of the time.
You will be able to look up anything prior to leaving that are scheduled works. Accidents can not be planned for.
If you have your crossing booked and it is later in the day....go the night before and stay over somewhere.
Have you asked this question before on here. I thought I had seen it.
Been down the M6 couple of times in the last month. Where it’s now 4 lanes from junction 19 (Knutsford), we’ve found a big improvement but there are continuing roadworks & a 50 mile/hr limit further down which obviously slows things up. Upgrading to smart motorways seems to be going on everywhere. We tend to use the toll road/ M40 & Heathrow side of the M25, don’t like the M1! We had a great run down at the beginning of the month, but as was said before, it only takes one incident & everything can change, we got to eurotunnel early & found there was a 2 hour delay!
I Would go M6, M6 toll, M42, M40 and anti clockwise M25 past Heathrow & Gatwick.
If you are caravan and camping club members and flash your card at the toll booth you only pat basic car rate on M6 toll road.
------------- It's only an expensive hobby when it's parked on your Drive....use it, love it , live it.

Are you sure about this, or does it just apply to Motorhomes not Car & Caravan?
Discount on the M6 toll for CAMC members stopped at the end of last year.
Edit
Pretty sure the Camping and Caravanning Club don't do M6 Toll discount.

------------- XVI yes?
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
I’m sorry - the M6 toll discount ended on 31st December 2018 which is a shame.
However, if it was me on a Friday heading off on holiday I think even the £11 charge would probably be worth while.
We live near to where the m42 meets the m40 and reckon on 3 hours to the tunnel on a clear run and 5 hours on a Friday afternoon. The M40 is generally clear but M25 stop start from M40 to Cobham services.

Highways England do an excellent app for mobiles. If you click on Flow it shows the average speed for each motorway you select from one junction to the next in both direction. Also gives access to cameras, orange info signs and road works.
A quick scroll gives you a good overview of the entire motorway.
M6 roadworks are not bad at the moment do it regularly.
Best route is M6, M40, M25 anticlockwise.
Given the time you are leaving then you will get traffic at J15 and J10/J11 and J6 but it will only cost you 20 to 30 min.
M6 toll is an option to get past J10/11 J6 issues.
Use RDS/TMC on the radio and an interactive NAV if you have one.
Hi just done that trip from Rugby, do not use the M1 M25, go down the M40 M25 anti clockwise you will save hours, my mate lives in Coventry and is a night time truck driver and NEVER uses the M1. Always M40.
