The French do have a style all of their own but in Austria road charging per kilometre now applies to motorhomes of 3500 and above. i.e. most motorhomes. You have to register your vehicle in the commercial trucking area and buy a "go-box" for an initial Euros 50 then pay at the rate of 19 cents per km or 39 cents per kn depending on the weight. Failure to do so - and it is easy to miss the pictorial signs which DO NOT show a motorhome - means you will be stopped by armed troopers and fined Euros 220 plus the cost of kilometrage completed and future estimates distances. Failure or refusal to pay means that the mvan can be clamped, impounded, the driver imprisoned and passengers accompanied to an hotel. We saw a 12 seater minibus with children in it held up for 2 hours while the driver obtained a credit card number from his bosses on a Sunday afternoon. Later 23 mvans carrying toys for orphanages in Bosnia & Croatia were each fined. Since lorries and HGVs are not allowed to travel at all on Sundays the registration offices and the access tunnels under their motorways are closed. Details check the web WWW.ASFINAG better still stay out of Austria.

We have a small three person Wils Country (now Terra Nova) tent. At a very nice campsite just south of Ludlow we ended up paying £25 for two nights, this would have been the same even if we had a 30 foot caravan and a range rover!

The modest footprint out tent made was clearly no comparison to the larger caravans with awnings etc

... But I can see that people with large units may often have more occupants than just the basic 2, so the site owner will get more revenue from the bigger pitch if they can put a family on it....

I agree with this to a large degree, but many, many of the people we see with giant caravans, awnings and cars are just 2 people.  Also, some sites don't charge per person, but per pitch.

Glad to see that lots of people share my views.  I really think we should start speaking up when we think we are definitely being unfairly treated.

Imagine a campsite designed for and occupied soley by motorhomes - the owner would make more money because the pitches could be closer together, at the same time leaving the required amount of distance between each one.

Have a good weekend, all.  Wer'e off to the Isle of Wight - yippee!

Jan
