for the motorhomers and dog owners amongst us....please don't take this personally...its just a general observation .....

Just returned from two glorious weeks on a great little caravan site oop North as they say.

a few things that spoiled our holiday were ;-

1) we all appreciate having a great view from our caravan windows but consider the ''little fella'' next door. If you have a motorhome which towers over a touring caravan can you please be considerate when siting it? It may be longer and higher than everyone else on site but that doesn't give carte blanche to pull forward of everyone to get a ''better view'' to the detriment of everyone else on site. Regularly we had what we described as ''white out'' having returned from a day out walking to find a large white wall blocking out the view/sunlight . Only once did owner come around to use to ask if they were too far forward of the line of caravans on the very small farm site and thanked them for their consideration . Unlike the couple with a car being towed on a trailer who decided to block our car in with their trailer - we found this out after returning from a walk to go out for an evening meal and they were no where to be found and the trailer had a wheel lock on...Meal cancelled - one very angry wife...They apologised the next day and said they didn't realise we would need to use our car that night !

2) If a public footpath runs through a caravan site - could dog owners not use it as a dog loo? On numerous occasions several users of the site had to remonstrate / remind dog owners that there were children playing on the grass at the side of the footpath ( un fenced site ) and although some cleared up the dog ''doings'' many didn't and just walked off . One in particularly told my wife to ''F off - its a public footpath and you dont own it''
I applaud responsible do owners but although they clean up the ''doings'' ( wifes posh word ) it can still leave residue on the grass that children can pick up.
We are both dog lovers but would ask other dog owners ...if they had people using their front gardens as dog loos -- would they complain ?

3) please take the poo bags home and dont hang them from the nearest bush or tree - One couple seen ''decorating'' the bush on front of our caravan were reminded of such on their return journey up the path. They denied it was theirs and walked off laughing....Nice .

sorry if this sounds like a rant...but common courtesy makes a better place especially on small sites.

Common courtesy like common sense, is a very scarce thing, as are common manners. It's all me, me, me nowadays. I wonder where the kids get it from!

Your rant is understandable.
We pick up after other people's dogs as well as our own. If a dog smells another dog's pee or poo, then it triggers a response to do the same, so picking up other's mess may reduce future fouling. We have been on some sites with a specific "flick it" policy (one site leaving old pokers for the purpose), because no one goes into the brambles & after a few days, Nature will have rotted it away. But throwing bags up on branches is one of life's mysteries.
As for blocking other's views - I can see your point. I'm not defending MH drivers (some are hired & there may be little or no briefing before they drive off), but we may be told which way our habitation door must face, or which corner must line up to a marker post - we don't always have a choice of where to go. Our dog won't sit or lie on gravel, so we usually go on one side or up to the end of the hardstand so her lead reaches the grass. But again - a MH towing a car: another one of life's little mysteries.

Well moorlander999, as a dog owner, I couldn't agree with you more on items 2) & 3) on your O/P.

I have a lot to do with the dog rescue charity that I got my dog from, so apart from the usual dog walking acquaintances/friends etc. I have contact with a LOT of dog owners, we ALL deplore the practices that you highlight.

The dog charity has an annual camping w/e for fosterers and adopters, for several years up until this year it was held on a camp site beside Fosse Way public bridleway. Firstly on arrival we would walk the (exclusive to us) rally field to clear up the mess left by the dog agility group that previously had use of it and/or others coming into the (private!) field from gaps in the hedge from Fosse Way, then we would pitch our tents/caravans, so we knew that the field was clear on our arrival. We are a pretty conciousness lot and pick up after our own dogs and any other 'accidents' that our group dogs had, but we kept finding substantial amounts of poo that we couldn't account for! Turns out that Jo Public were trespassing through gaps in the hedge to exercise their dogs on the field despite our group camping on it, and not bothering to clear up! When caught severe words were had, but no remorse or attempts to clear up were ever made, just intolerable arrogance and the occasional abuse.

So for what it's worth, a good many of us dog owners are responsible, but a minority (isn't that always the way in life!) spoil it for everyone else including us responsible owners!

Having just done another 800 miles in Scotland in a car, it is still the case that dozens of motorhome drivers have no courtesy whatsoever.

May I also add....

Can dog owners please restrain their dogs whilst mixing with other public, even if there is no specific notice. We had a pleasant outing walk spoiled by free range dogs approaching our 2 small nervous granddaughters. Saying the dog is very friendly is no help, we don,t know that.

In fairness, daveyjp, it's not usually motorhome owners that that I find are in this category but those who drive hired ones. Yes, these folks may not get much time for instruction and familiarisation with the vehicle they've hired but they still have to abide by the rules.

I'm a former dog owner, too, moorlander, and totally agree with (2) and (3).

As to (1), just imagine what it's like to be in a small tent next door to one of these!

I agree, times we have been to sites with great dog fields/ walking areas, complete with dog poo bins, and found that owners have not bothered to pick up after their pets. Vile.

We do not have a dog. We love dogs and one of us is from a dog breeding home. The parasitic worms in both dogs and cats are Toxocara Canis and Toxocara Cati. This parasite leaves the host in the poop of both.
Toxocariasis is of importance to any parent/grandparent and it cannot be stressed how important it is to clean up after both cats and dogs immediately. Eggs within stools are hardly visible to the naked eye. The worms are easier to spot, depending on age of the parasite. Both dogs and cats having the run of the owners own garden must be cleaned up after straight away, so why owners cannot grasp the 'also when on holiday at exercise' is beyond any sensible persons reason.
Toxocariasis in humans can cause blindness, strangely for some unknown reason, just one eye is often infected. Visceral Toxacariasis can affect body organs, if not found early enough.
Would we have a dog today? Nope.

I totally agree with picking-up after your dog (and we do, always) but let's not scaremonger that every dog poop carries significant risk of Toxocariasis and organ failure in our children and grandchildren. See

here for objective info.

Responsible owners worm their dogs and cats. Responsible parents and grandparents encourage good hygiene practices like hand-washing.

If you choose not to own a dog simply because you see them as a potential source of Toxocariasis infection, that's surely a bit of an over-reaction.

Who cleans up after foxes?

There are an estimated total of app 260,000 foxes in the UK,there are app 9.9 million dogs in the UK,hardly a relevant comparison.

Not a comparison, saxo1, but a reminder that 260,000 (your estimate) daily fox poops also contribute to the problem, hence need for handwashing.

My comments were to suggest to those 'not in the know' to get their dogs and cats vaccinated. It was not written to scaremonger, rather more to educate the real need to vaccinate.
I had the hope that it would make people who do have dogs realise the importance of it. I could have added that dog poo is often eaten by both dogs and foxes. The likely hood of a dog eating another animals poop is more likely if the poop it happens upon does contain eggs or worms. For that same reason (known only to dogs) they will eat the poop of rabbits, foxes, horses, cows, goats and badgers . The fact that we do not own a dog has nothing to do with anything. In fact I am a qualified Animal Health Consultant (both large and small animals) employed for over 40 years in the dispensing/prescription writing of animal medicines. (Medicines Order 1984) We do not own a dog as we are never at home for many weeks in a year. We do however have dogs stay with us in our home and van whilst the owner of said dog is on holiday.

There is always a need to wash your hands. Foxes , dogs and cats always clean their paws and other areas in the interest of good hygiene.

Dont want to start a verbal battle but having recently purchased a motorhome ( used to do tents and folding camper) we are often directed where and how to park by the wardens. We also usually book space for an awning so we can if the weathers fine put out our sun canopy - now what annoys me is getting up ready to sit on our pitch /the patch of grass in between the pitches to find that the caravan owner next door has used their 'parking' space for their massive awning and therefore has nowhere to park their car and so it is parked on the grass dividing strip right up to the edge of our pitch thus preventing us from enjoying our canopy.
I suppose like the motorhome who may block your view that this is not done deliberately so although annoying we usually just try to chill and out tolerate the inconvenience :)
