Hello peeps..we have just purchased a Ford iveco daily conversion and it has a Carver water heater in it. The guy said they had never gotten it to work. I thought a waste of space so I asked my electrician to check it all out. He tested all the points of electric and all came good except the mains.. he got in behind the unit and found it was unplugged. We plugged it in, filled the 100 ltr water tank under the van, turned the pump on and the heater on and left it for half an hr to heat up..when we returned the water was leaking all over the road, from the vent and also into the van. It seemed like the water pump just kept pumping into the smaller Carver and it had nowhere to go. We have only just got the van and we really want to get things fixed quickly without feeling like we have done the wrong thing. Any help or advice would b amazing. We live in Bristol if you have any contacts. Many thanks x
best money you will ever spend is to get a proper mobile guy to come out and take a look at it, someone that knows what they are doing like a caravan technician
If it's leaking at the front of the heater then it has to be the 'O' ring that has either split, perished or missing which is quite big as it's is roughly the same diameter as the tank. If you are a confident DIY person with some mechanical experience then the task of a repair can be achieved but you need to drain the water system first and remove the complete tank to repair it. Firstly you have to remove the cowl (which you call the vent) then disconnect the mains cable and gas pipe union at the rear plus the hot and cold flexible water pipes behind the cowl to which you can then slide out the whole unit out from the outside. There is a single tie rod (very long threaded spindle) that goes right through the centre of the tank which screws in at the base and has to be undone and removed to access the inside of the tank. At the top (open end) of the stainless steel cylinder it is funnelled (the same shape as the end of a trumpet) which is where the 'O' ring seats and seals the tank off from the water. Clean the mating surfaces, replace with a new 'O' ring and re-assemble the tank in reverse order but when you fit the cowl back on you will need to remove the old sealant 100% and replace with new sealant to prevent any rain water from accessing the square port. The best way is with either white spirit or methylated spirits and then clean thorougly 100% with car polish to remove any remaining film otherwise the new sealant won't bond successfully to the mating surfaces. When completed, refill the water system and check for any internal leaks from the tank and also pour some water around the cowl with a water carrier to make sure that the sealant has adhered sufficiently to avoid any rain water ingress.
Below is a link showing an exploded diagram of the Carver Cascade II hot water tank.
Item 22 (part number 605270) is the big rubber 'O' ring that you need to replace. Hope this information helps.
Thanks so much for both those replies. I'm not sure about the winterisation of it as we bought it from a family who said they never were able to get it to work. This is because after the electrician went over the system with a fine tooth comb he found it was disconnected at the mains behind the electric box. How will I know if its split? And is there a way to check that it's the O ring without flooding our van anymore?
Thanks again x
I have checked it and I can see long cracks all along the tank so I presume that it has been left with water in the winter. Well it's good to know what the problem is..I.e is null and void. So now onto a new replacement any ideas of good heaters to get? Also how will we run the cold water now? It must be a case of putting a stop where the heater joined the pipes?
Thanks again everyone x
Hi, before going down the new heater route give Gary a call at Arc Systems, Nottingham. He is the master of Carver items and can supply most parts as well as a full repair sevice.
If you google caravan breakers you’ll get lots of hits including camper van breakers. I’m not sure but the units are probably interchangeable. Pick some near you and start phoning.
Will be a lot cheaper than new parts and just as good. Buy one complete and keep your own one for internal parts.
There are several Carver Cascade 2 hot water tanks currently for sale on Ebay if you look but they do vary in price though. The best option is to purchase a used heater as you are less likely going to encounter any problems if you install an exact replacement.
We replaced our Carver (not made under that name any more) with a new identical Henry (I think it was called) from Leisureshop Direct (other suppliers are available, seen them in parts shops). Our Carver was leaking down the outside of the van, and hence the water pump kept running to keep the tank topped up. But we weren't able to source a replacement seal or valve, looked everywhere; not even our habitation service man could help, except suggesting the breakers yard route mentioned above. The replacement worked fine for the remaining years we had that Autosleeper Clubman.
