Hello you lovely lot, have a question
So eventually looking at getting a new motorhome, and what I want to know if anyone had issues using .campsite if your habitation was continental (on drivers side) in regards of going on pitch forwards to out awning up etc...
Depends on the site. Some say all habitation doors must open on the same side. Others say go in front first / rear first / sideways - whatever you want.
We chose a MH with the door at the pavement side for safety reasons, because we have a dog that leaps out of that door (albeit always attached to the vehicle).
That would only be an issue if it was a hardstanding pitch with a grass pitch adjacent designated specifically for an awning so the habitation door would have to be adjacent to the grass. If it's a wide hardstanding or complete grass pitch then you should be able to pitch which ever way suits best.
On CMC sites you can drive into a pitch rather than reversing which should allow you room to erect an awning in the same way as everyone else. You may experience more difficulty on some commercial sites and it would be best to ask that question before booking. ON most sites it won't be that difficult to overcome.
We have a Fiat Ducato based Possl similar to Globecar with the sliding door on the drivers side. We have never had any issues on any sites that we have visited.
I actually prefer it to be on the "wrong" side.
Had a MH with the door on the "wrong" side for 12 years and never had a problem on any site.
I think (could be wrong) that sites need to have caravans all hitch facing out due to fire regulations and ease of towing them out but don't think that this would apply to a motorhome.
unless some sites have a hard and fast rule about reversing in, but we have never came across one
My motorhome door is on the offside , never had a problem anywhere in 8 years , the only place I’ve ever been asked to back in was at sandringham cmc site where they said it was down to some regulation but even then the Pitches were spacious and didn’t cause an issue. I’ve found abroad people just pitch how they like anyway.
------------- Never take life seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway.
When my kids where young I specifically chose to have a VW T5 converted in Britain as I wasn't prepared to have the door on the off side as the factory spec one had, I could never understand why people with young kids would opt for this. Now they are older its not a problem so I choose the van with the layout that suits my needs rather than what side the door is on and if you plan to travel abroad your back to the same problem anyway.
