Hi we rented a 6 berth elldis last year and toured Scotland with another couple. We loved it.
We have decided not to wait on retiring but to buy a used motorhomes this year.
We would like a low line, seating at rear nomfixed bed nor bunks.
What should we be looking for? Any tips on what to look for when buying used?
Many thanks
Best thing just visit a couple of dealers.
Then a couple of vans that suit your needs will become apparent.
Next decision is.
A. Purchase of a dealer. Then some guarantees and recourse if things aren’t right.
B. Purchase privately. Possibly cheaper. Not a lot can be done if minor things wrong. Possible claim on major faults if not as described. Most sellers will provide a receipt stating. “Sold as seen”
I would only advise choice B if you can get someone who lots of experience to look at the van for you.
Still it’s not all doom and gloom there are some very good private sellers.
Good hunting. I hope you find just the van for you. 👍
Get to the caravan & motorhome show at NEC. Every make & model is there. Be firm with yourselves - no looking in the MHs that look like horse boxes or you'll run out of time & energy. Ignore the price except to note how the price reflects the build quality & whether extras (like a water tank) are included or not. You're looking at layouts - there are about half a dozen that repeat across makes. Which one suits you? And you're looking to see what you're going to try for second hand.
We camped in a tent for 10 years before getting our first MH. I think we did a lot of peering through MH windows in car parks....
I agree with Fiona if you can get to the NEC you can seen what is currently available and it might help you decide what makes do the layout you like. Once you have that fixed you can then search for the secondhand market. I understand that many of the Warner Motorhome Shows around the country are a good places to look at secondhand vans.
Many thanks for replies.
We did visit NEC show last October and thought decided on low line but on looking at other makes other than Eldis last night I prefer and remember doing so at the show where the kitchen is opposite the dining area rather than cupboards and bathroom.
We found a couple of Bailey 665 Approach which meet our decisions of rear lounge, low line, 3rd Allen in small bed lowered rather than overcabin.
It’s 2017 model from a dealer
Any thoughts or disadvantages on this model?
are you sure you dont want a fixed bed? we wouldnt be without ours!
we are also members of motorhomefun forum, where they have a great resource download on buying a used motorhome. its £15 a year but money well spent, trust me !!
lots of things to consider including where you will store or keep the van, which then determines the length you need. owning a motorhome and having to pay storage charges makes for a very expensive motorhome.
we have just bought a 2015 bailey approach autograph 745 and are happy with it, but it is our third motorhome and we are hoping it will be our last for a long time lol.
