I've just read a report from the Yorkshire Post dated 7th January 2020 regarding government plans to increase road tax on motorhomes by 700% from £265 t0 £2135. Seems outrageous to me. I'm a caravanner, but I do feel concerned for current and future motorhomers..
Are you talking about the first year VED or the annual VED from year 2 onwards? Taxation on cars changed in 2017 so some cars already have a first year rate of £2000 or more.
I have no idea. I just thought I'd pass the message on. I saw the article on Google news on my phone. An article from the Yorkshire Post. If true, I would imagine a serious reduction of people buying motorhomes.
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
I think Rob and Tina are correct in that the outrageous tax is based on the VED charges that apply only on new vehicles., I would also guess that if you purchased a second hand Motorhome after the new tax charges are introduced you would also be subject to the increase in tax over the first 5 years.
Surely, if you can afford to buy a brand new motorhome you are going to want a good package deal with the dealer which will include the first year's tax? So shouldn't affect the new owner and a good bargaining point.
It only applies to 2020 models with the latest engines. If you were to find a new older model it would still be classed under the old rules. Owners of existing motorhomes will continue to pay the old rate of VED. Up until this year manufacturers of motorhomes have not been required to show emissions on the Certificate of Conformity but they do now.
Its to do with an EU regulation 2018/1832 that says all new Light Commercial Vehicles under 3500kg are taxed according to the CO2 emissions, cars are already taxed this way and those who like a big car for towing pay a higher road tax than those who tow with a car which produces less CO2.
The thing that has changed is that motorhomes where previously exempt from this rule as they weren't classed as a LGV.
As far as I understand it.

it would be if the dealers costs can be passed back to the govt - the reality is that 2k is a lot of money to lose of you sell 1 brand new motorhome each week - £104k per year, that equates to 3 persons wages for a year - well done UK govt !!!!
