Has anyone put their converted campervan through the DVLA since the rule change last October 2019? If so how did it go? My van is complete except for the rule change items of 2nd window, motorhome decals and awning rail. After insulating and ply lining the walls, I dont feel inclined to make yet another hole in my van to follow what appears to be a pointless rule. Someone's updated experience would be useful. Hi Belinda, you can still apply for a change of vehicle type, but most people have their v5 returned as a van with windows. If the inside conforms to the dvla regulation then the insurance companies are normally happy to insure as a motorcaravan.

I think I was amoung the first with my newly converted T6 to get the V5 back as a Van With Windows. June 2019, I tried again with more photos, poptop up, side awning out etc but to no avail. The only way to get it registered as a Motor Home, there is no classification as Campervan, is to have it fitted with an high top with windows, not a pop top. You may then get it re classified as a Motorhome. After a lot of discussion on the T6 forum, we came to the conclusion that it was all to do with the new tax regime for motorhomes but the DVLA said it was for emergny service use for identification purposes. There has been no change to date re the rules. You are also, as a Van with windows, liable to the speed limits of 50, 60, 70mph. There are arguments about this if your van has been converted but its yet to be tested in law. Let me know if anyone knows different.

Be Happy, this aint a trial run.

Mine was re-registered last year as Motor Caravan. The thing is that a caravan is something that you would expect to live in, and that means standing upright without any changes. So it must be a high top and not a pop top. I too have heard the thing about emergency services identification in event of an accident or fire.
Truth about mine, is that it was first registered in 1993 as a panel van, but had been professionally converted and signed off 2 days before the registration, so it had been wrong for 26 years.

Flintlock. Check out the regs re dual purpose vehicles. A UK legislation rather than V5 classification, although if you have a pop top it won't apply.
