Hi, I’m looking to purchase my first Motorhome and wondered if anyone had had problems with neighbours. There is a covenant on my deeds 5hat says no caravans or commercial vehicles but nothing about Motorcaravans.

Thanks
Tony.

We have the same, have had a caravan for last ten years without a problem, don't fall out with your neighbors, provided it doesn't restrict access etc I can't see the problem

In legal terms, 'mobile home' and 'caravan' are synonymous and defined as:[1] 'any structure designed or adapted for human habitation which is capable of being moved from one place to another (whether by being towed, or by being transported on a motor vehicle or trailer) and any motor vehicle so designed or adapted'.

So, strictly speaking your covenant includes motorhomes. However, unless it is a large vehicle that causes an inconvenience, I doubt if there would be any problem. Have a look around and see if anyone else keeps a van of any sort on their drive.

It may also be possible to have the covenant removed.

Ideally you discuss this with your neighbours before going ahead.

Covenants are often on deeds to meet aspecific problem at the time of construction.
For example, our house, which is nearly 100 years old, has covenants that

"prohibits the erection of marquees for the purpose of religious meetings." and
" prohibits the storing of munitions and explosives on the property".

This really put the kybosh on my plan to put up the tent for an IRA prayer meeting.

Try to find somewhere to put it that isn’t sticking out like a sore thumb! People will get annoyed if it is obstructing their view etc but if you can put it down the side of the house, behind the property line, hopefully no one will mind. Where I used to live, lots of people had made a special entrance to their back or side gardens for a caravan which, when the caravan was in place, was barely noticeable and I don’t think anyone ever complained in relation to the covenant with them. The only issue I remember was one guy at the end of our street who had a dispute with his neighbour because the neighbour thought his caravan was taking up more than his fair share of the width of the shared driveway.

Most of your neighbours probably won't mind...but there will always be one!

We have a local neighbour who went out and bought quite a large Motorhome without first considering where he was going to keep it. He thought he had got himself a bargain compared to those he had seen in the dealerships, and believed that he could keep it parked on the road outside his house.

How mistaken he was, living on a bus route, he was causing an obstruction to the Bus stop,so he was made to move it. He then put it on his drive, reversed tight upto his Garage door, but the cab and the overhang of the overcab bunk area now protrude onto the pavement by about a metre, forcing any passers by to walk around it and onto the edge of the curb via the grass verge. Its been like that all winter.

Not such a problem.maybe whilst the children have been off school, but come September when they return, this is a main route path from the 1000+ pupil secondary school and the areas main Nursery provision buildings, so an obstruction to Mothers with Prams, and Boisterous teenagers alike, I rather think that his actions are asking for trouble.

Most people are Ok provided it doesn't bother them. There is the story of the neighbour who objected, even though the unit was hidden behind a gate and behind the building and then quoted the legalese. The MH owner simply parked it on the public road in front of Mr Grumpy's front window. Police called, who basically said that as it was taxed, MOT and insured they couldn't do anything about it. Check with your neighbours if they are reasonable people.
Often these covenants are put in place on new build sites to stop the builders living there in ratty caravans.
