Given my ongoing saga of the Thetford fridge in the used caravan i bought with a possible answer in the wind i got that cheesed off i went out and bought a used motorhome. I got a Lunar Rockstar 780 on a Fiat Ducato with the 2.8 engine low mileage and no major repairs needed. I've already driven it home and no problems. Now i should be able to settle my own question of which would be more suitable to what i want, whatever that is then i will sell the other. Looking forward to getting out and finding out.

Be a proper research scientist. Tow the caravan behind the motor home.

Good luck!

I opted for a custom converted VW Crafter as I decided against towing.

Although I was fine towing a small leisure trailer, I do not fancy towing a caravan.

I do not think that I would have done that. Especially as I would not have room on our property for the two.
If the fridge was the only problem, would it not have been easier to buy a new fridge? Then, having fixed that problem take the new 'fridge out for a ride, return home and sleep on board. If that was then fine, sell it and buy a MH. If you do not book somewhere to use either soon, you will have more problems. Nowhere to go with either. You must be the boss in your house, that could never happen in 'ours'.

I think it's brilliant - made me laugh. It's like you've had an argument with caravan fridge girlfriend & flounced off with motorhome woman in a huff because you couldn't sort it out.
Joking apart, if you've got room, keep both. There are pro's and con's to both, as you'll find out. Compromises for both too. Like any relationship.

If you want to spend a week or two on a site, car and caravan without a moment's hesitation. If you want to tour, a night or two here and there, motorhome for sure. That's the test really. Neither is perfect for everything, so it depends how you want to use it.

Colin has got it spot on. If you want to stop in a particular area for a week or two and use your car for local travel, then get a caravan.
If you want to tour a wider area with a few days in each place, then a motorhome.

I think though, that a motorhome is fine for stopping for a week or two, but I wouldn't want the hassle of setting up & packing up a caravan every few every days for touring.

The only snag I can see with stopping for a week or two with a motorhome is that it would depend on how big the motorhome was and how close the site was to public transport. I too wouldn't want the hassle of setting up & packing up a caravan every few days either, but the neither would I want to nip down the shops in a large motorhome. Parking would be a nightmare in a lot of places. At least a caravan can be left set up on site, and the car used for running around.

Perfectly true Colin, but there are many sites in or on the edge of towns where shopping is not an issue. We prefer to use public transport when available, and being pensioners, it's free.

Same with us Capt. Being a retired train driver we get free train travel too.

I suppose if you pick your sites carefully, close to town or on a bus route, there is no problem staying an extended period in a motorhome. Sites we often choose though are well out of town and off bus routes too, although if there is a bus we will use it, as we did when we stayed at Canterbury. The site was well out of town but frequent buses stopped right outside. Very handy and no parking problems in town.

Colin

You hit it on the head, my problem was that i was uncertain what was best for me the caravan offers less ongoing costs a tad more room and leaves you still mobil via the tow vehicle but seems more suited to longer stops with more facilities needed while the motorhome has virtually the same facilities onboard costs more to operate and limits your mobility when stopped unless you want a towed car (i don't) or can carry a bicycle or motorised something, but it does seem that its far better suited to short or overnight stops, horses for courses, using the motorhome to tow the caravan would be a laugh if nothing else. The fridge saga is really nothing more than cussedness on my part, i bought the caravan as a mug because of the amount of silly faults that i never examined when i should have but all are replaced renewed or repaired and look and work as they should except the fridge, i've written it before but i cannot believe how ruddy difficult it has been trying to get info on its parts but i will not give up or give in to buying a £700+ replacement as the easy way out. The info i need and the parts should be available and i will get them, i'm even thinking of putting a video on youtube when its done so any other mug like me gets some help, practically every other fridge is covered in depth but this Thetford N112 EES model must be what they use in secret bunkers and covered by the OSA. On a more cheery note buying the motorhome is not really wasteful, i got a good deal by going over it with a fine tooth comb testing every system on it and ensuring i got answers to every question i asked and the sellors needed it gone funds required etc., they were great people as well, so given what i payed and the prices used motorhomes are making i can give both the caravan and the motorhome a years trial before making a choice, given what i've done on the caravan and what i've paid for the motorhome i should come out even, and that is my thinking and plans so far.

Just updating, the motorhome came with what described as a bicycle carrier but its made of steel with a 6 inch wide ramp leading to the carrying platform, that to me is a motorbike carrier but it was heavily damaged both ends seemingly by being reversed a bit carelessly. Its all Q.D. so i took it off and have been working on it in my spare time, its all straightened up now and cleaning and repainting are next. I'm thinking of a used electric scooter as the go anywhere (shops etc.,) on board option, anyone got any good advice to guide me.

Sounds like the carrier was fitted properly (otherwise there’s a risk of damp if the fixings were put in the wrong place). We’ve found a push bike most useful for nipping to local shops for milk or the paper. Or for a day out along a canal, for example, to get farther than walking. An electric scooter seems a good idea (are they legal on the road yet? I can’t remember.) A motorbike would be heavy hanging on the end - might make the steering a bit light?

Definately a scooter and at the moment electric is the choice, kerb weight is lighter than engined and they can charge of the carry vehicle even stationary if its got good solar or a hook-up, also the step through mounting rather than the leg over of normal motorcycles, getting a bit to lazy to keep cocking my leg over. Does anyone have any info about regs on driving them i only know in Turkey they require nothing not even a licence long as its electric, anyone point me towards european rules.
