I’ve just put my deposit on a new Elddis Autoquest 155 - but am having serious doubts about the toilet shower sink area . Sink is folding and shower ISNT a sealed pod - any ideas on how this can be adapted ?
Also no window in bathroom to let out toilet smells and humidity from showering - any suggestions on adaptation??? Or should I just lose my deposit ??

Welcome to the forum. Are you an experienced motorhomer, or perhaps a convert from caravanning? If so you will probably realise the problems in doing any modifications, not least that any structural alteration might invalidate the warranty.

I don't like folding basins, and I think the only problem in replacing it with a fixed one, would be obtaining a good finish. I don't see a problem with the shower unit. It is described as a 'wet room' and looks quite functional and you only have to worry if you're on a site without facilities.

Lack of window... that is a big minus point. Does it have a roof vent? If not, a competent workshop should be able to fit an opening roof light, but again - warranty??

IMHO these compact bathrooms are only suitable for occasional use, there are so many compromises made to get it all in a barely adequate space and they are not for me.

As to any way of modifying it to fixed sink and shower cubical, I'd say no! If you swapped the folding sink to a fixed one you wouldn't be able to use the toilet. If you wanted a full shower cubical then the toilet would have to go. As already pointed out, any modifications would likely invalidate your warranty.

As much as I hate those kinds of bathrooms and refused to consider one when I was looking to buy a caravan, I think that's as good as it gets in the space available.

Until Covid situation forced things to be different by closure/limitation of site toilet/showers, a huge number of people never used their onboard facilities at all, even those with full bathrooms with full sized separate shower cubicles! Unless you are planning on using a lot of sites without toilet/shower blocks then I think you may just have to get used to the set up. As many have found, see some of the recent posts on Covid enforced use of onboard facilities, think you may find your fears are far greater than the reality of using such a set up.

In the longer term, any modified/customised changes may impact negatively on the resale value of the vehicle.

If you use the right chemicals in the toilet tank (I found Elsan to be the best and Thetford the worst!), you won't have any smells from from the toilet itself.

I'd be very surprised indeed if there wasn't some kind of roof vent in the bathroom to avoid condensation from the shower, it may not be a big opening one but at least a small mushroom one. No window in the bathroom is not that uncommon even in full sized ones.

We have an Elddis 185 which has no window in the end bathroom, it does have a fixed sink and enclosed shower cubicle but the roof vent works very well in removing any smells , although we don’t get much when using the fluid additives

I put a computer fan in our toilet vent, it's in a piece of 4mm perspex and just rests on some strips of perspex I glued on the frame.
Works very well, you can feel a draught coming under the door when it's on. I put a switched resistor in series to slow it down and just leave it on 24/7 uses about 0.1 amps

155 has a roof vent, the panel separating the shower from the toilet does a good job of keeping water in the correct area and with the toilet blade closed there's no smell at all. You wouldn't want to use it if you were a bit robust though.

Hi ,
No I’ve never had a caravan and this is our first motorhome - I have no intention of using the public showers and loos on a camp site - we have to be careful as have underlying health issues - so wanted a van that could serve fully our needs for LOIS and washing - Having second thoughts ( I’m not very big ) but it seems very tight for showering - I’d prefer the encore 255 but it’s above our budget - any recommendations appreciated - we would prefer two separate sleeping areas or would have gone for a two berth with proper ensuite
Best wishes
Dawn

Thanks for your info - not too robust - just thought it looked tight and no white walls where the shower is - it has a kind of wallpaper effect plastic - possibly a mould developer as not glassy smooth 💐💐

Hi there - that’s a really good idea - extractor fan in the bathroom - but the wiring must be complicated - could you explain how it is wired ????

So you folk who have given me such useful info - Does anyone have any ideas on a motorhome van that has two separate areas to sleep AND a proper bathroom with separate shower and is under 48 grand ????
Really don’t want to be fighting with walls when having a scrub ( and not about to go into public washrooms because of covid )
Thanks and best wishes in advance 💐💐

Dawndowns, If you are set on going with a new motorhome, may I suggest that you hire one for a short break and 'road test' it to see if it suits your needs. Most vans will be a compromise and hopefully, the Covid pandemic will be solved and you won't have to rely solely on the van facilities.

Get yourself the latest Motorhome magazines they will have motorhomes of all types, sizes etc and in particular the different layouts and prices, this may be a good place to start.
You may also want to consider a 2-3 year old vehicle , higher spec or your budget

Bathroom with a separate shower will limit you to a small range of MHs.
Alternatively, maybe stop worrying about using site facilities. All the ones I’ve been on have been cleaned regularly, there’s 70% alcohol hand gel everywhere, social distancing, masks - all the stuff that’s been mentioned on other forums. Or maybe motorhoming just isn’t right for you right now.
