we were going to get a new elddis 105 motorhome, but due to the long wait time could be july 2021, we had a rethink and the way the country is ie corvid restrictions/lockdowns etc, who knows when the vaccine will be ready, and still needing a car for general running about. after a lot of thinking we are going to get a vw t6.1 camper made to order, and just have the one vehicle and can use it for overnight stopovers or day trips, rather than have it stood on drive. so we think it would be more practical to use, i know the interior space is more limiting, but we used to use the cmhc club sites when we had the last van, and it would be better for going down the narrow lanes where we live. we did look into buying a good secondhand one but the prices are high why get one thats 4-6 years old when i can get the latest model for a little bit more i have had the price just need to go and sort colour scheme and interior now.

Glad you have come to a decision. It's not easy. Enjoy when you get it.

For many years we only had one vehicle and this worked OK. At least I did not have the problem of height barriers in those days. Parking is one thing you might want to consider if you rely on your van for everything.

I do agree about the high prices of second hand vans. A lot of people seem keen to try a motorhome/campervan. I wonder who long that will last?

I'm tired of reality, so I'm off to look for a good fantasy.

We've had our VW van for 10 years now, and although we do have another car to use, the 'van goes out regularly.
You do just have to consider the size a little when thinking about parking, whilst it does fit in a car space the front doors are big and it can be tricky to climb out if the spaces are tight. Also as said before, height barriers have to be considered, our is a pop-top so 2 m high, most barriers are 2.1m so ok.

But it's great for transporting large items, DIY stuff etc. And though we choose not to camp out of season, we could do.
OH uses it for hobby weekends, and we recently had a number of short breaks where we slept in Travelodges but used the 'van for days out, great for lunch breaks (and afternoon naps).

I'm jealous. I'm waiting a year or 2 for all those bargains from the folk who decided this year to buy their dream only to find they didn't like it

Given the outrageous prices of second hand campers & VW’s in particular at the moment it probably makes sense to get exactly what you want by buying new.        I have a T5 as my only vehicle & wouldn’t be without it. My is set up as a day van rather than a full on camper as I wanted the versatility of a multitude of different uses. As your only vehicle, I would advise getting a SWB unless you really think you need the extra 30cm or so that the LWB gives you. It is easier to park & nicer looking too (IMHO) I went for twin sliding doors for the extra practically. I can park up tight on the N/S & still access the back from the O/S. It comes in handy, I had a large ride on mover in the back at the weekend, loaded on one side & unloaded on the other.
Finally they are great to drive & you will not want to go back to a normal car after a while. Good luck & have fun in whatever conversion you choose.

i will still have a small van as a runabout, use it for the odd job fetching logs visiting etc. just that i will sell the car as i dont want three vehicles on drive. after owning a variety of motorhomes/caravans over the last 30 years i know one has to be careful whichever vehicle you get, i have driven out of some towns because we couldn't find a parking spot or the areas were dodgy in towns. just wait for this lockdown to finish in wales and then we can get out to check the finish of the workmanship in a couple of companies.

If I was in the market for a converted camper I would seriously look at this.
