hello all,
I am looking at buying a conversion from a Vauxhall Vivaro van to a campervan, and am looking at awnings. I wonder if its possible to fix a caravan awning rail to the side, and then buy a lightweight Porch awning - like you would use on a caravan - and if this would work ?
has anybody else done this - or come up with a solution so it is fixed to the vehicle ?

A caravan awning rail is fixed into the timber frame which is part of the construction whereas a Vauxhall Vivaro is constructed of pressed steel so the fixings would be entirely different. Possibly the use of self tapping screws may work but remember that waterproof sealant would have to be applied between the awning rail and steel surface. However, if it can be achieved you need to check the height of the porch awning too as the height of the vehicle may be lower than that of a caravan so you may encounter problems with slack at ground level unless a porch awning was custom made to fit.

Have you looked at a Sheltapod or something similar. You can attach it to the van without the need for an awning rail. If you have roof rails you can fix it to them using velcro straps or you can use suction clamps on the roof. If you do have roof rails you should be able to get an awning rail that goes underneath the roof rails.

I have a similar height campervan and I would recommend you gat a drive away awning. Mine is similar to a large dome tent that is stand alone when you leave site. It has a "tunnel section that goes from the tent to the van and can be attached by tying over the van roof of using magnets to hold it to the roof. We ties ours to the popup roof supports and a bungie over the roof to the far side and hooks onto the door mirror.
Ours id similar to the one in the link below
